I'm thinking about going vegetarian. My doc mentioned it last visit. Any diabetics on a vegan/veg/semi-veg diet? Has it helped glucose control or weight loss? My brother and his wife are vegetarian for a year now, and they seem to really enjoy it. Any advice on books, recipes, websites, etc. would be greatly apreciated! Hope you all have a nice weekend!

Some people might think that a vegetarian diet is healthier. Most veggies are low GI but of course it would depend on the rest of your diet - if you were a veggie but ate loads of chocolate for example, your BGs would still be bad! The weight loss would be similar I would think. The other thing I would say is make sure you get all your nutrients especially iron which is important for women. In my personal opinion I think that it is best to eat all food groups in moderation but then again the moderation is the problem!

Yeah, I know the info I read said you need to include a really wide variety of foods to get all the nutrients that that you might be missing. I noticed that my carb ratio has really changed in the past few days from not eating meat.I'm taking less at meals than before. I may need more protein. I am going to continue to eat fish, eggs and dairy. So it will be easier to get nutrients than being strictly vegan.I'm also going to see a nutritionist through my endocrinologist to help me along. Thanks Lizzie!

Jess,
I have been sitting on my hands for a year wanting to share our store with others. A little over a year ago my daughter at age 7 was diagnosed with type 1. Wanting answers, I began researching and found, "The pH Miracle for diabetes", by Robert O. Young. Studying his works has taught me the perfect design of the human body and how it is affected through improper water, food, stress, and the enviroment. I want the world to know what we have experienced since finding this gifted research scientist. My daughter's A1c was 6.3 and GTT was 325. Three months following Robert Young's program her A1c was 4.5 and soon after beginning his program her blood sugars normal. That gave us hope. Now, over a year later she is on no medication. She is filled full of nutritious food each and every day. Learning to prepare raw food is fun and amazingly delicious. This plan is somewhat different from a vegetarian diet. Robert Young's lovely wife, Shelley has several recipe books, "Back to the House of Health", and DVD's. I think they have published eight books and each one I have has delightful recipes. He has tons of information on, "Articles of Health", and "phmiracleliving". I am willing to help you any way I can feel free to contact me.

I am not sure about this. Are you claiming that Type 1 is cured by changing diet? Please can you give us some more information about how this works. I am not convinced by miracle cures and it worries me that people on this site may make changes to their medical treatment on your advice without talking to a doctor. I don't want to offend you and for all I know maye you are right but I think people should be careful and talk to their doctor before embarking on something like this. Also since this man is selling his cure and making money from it rather than offering this apparently amazing cure which could change millions of peoples lives free of charge, it seems slightly wrong to me to put this on a site like this one where people may be unhappy and desperate for help and taking their money for this. If this is really a genuine cure for type 1 then the man should offer it for free and that would be an amazing thing and would be publicised around the world. If he is a clever scientist he will find a way to make money other than this one, and he will be justly admired worldwide for his altruism as well as scientific advances. That is just my opinion though.

Jess,
The fact is: I bought a book, read it and put my daughter on the program. I have put time into finding out about different natural supplements and what they do. I have studied all different kinds of foods and how they affect the body. As I have learned, we have made minor changes. One thing is her blood sugar is normal. She cannot go back to the way she use to eat. She did not get diabetes overnight. Therefore, the damage cannot be repaired overnight. I want for her what any mom wants for their child, happy life, healthy life, long life. There are bunches of free articles written by, Robert Young on his research. His research is not only limited to diabetes. What I gather his theory to be is: clean up the internal terraine and your life can be much different.

Hey there,
Ok, I didn't respond to your post, but I understand what Lizzie is saying. And some of what I may say might bother you a bit, but nonetheless, it's the truth. You have to understand that there are people on this site that are living with illnesses and diseases, and conditions, and as some methods may work for some, I can't imagine anybody not jumping at the chance to cure diabetes, or infertility, or depression, or MS, autism, grave's disease, etc. So people get a little weary of non-western theories of medicine and treating illness, because if it were that easy, then nobody would get sick and die, or have retinopathy, or urine protein, etc. The other thing is that there are spammers on this site trying to sell whatever they can. You have a profile with a minute amount of info, then saying you have a diabetes-cured daughter, but want support. A lot of us pour our heart out here because its where we can talk about what is going on to people who are experiencing it. Going through it too, and its as anonymous as you want it to be. If we want to talk to people who don't experience what we do, well then we have our doctors and family for that. And unfortunately, if you aren't here to sell a product to people, then you need to be aware of what is called the "honeymoon period" in diabetes. Its when you are diagnosed and your insulin needs go down considerably for a period of time. You should research this, because if your daghter WAS diagnosed with diabetes....it's not just going to go away.....not that easily. Decades of medical research have proved this. I'm sorry if I was curt or abrassive, I don't feel that way, I am just speaking my mind, looking for support, doing what I came here for. Andd while I am impressed that Robert Young quoted Ralph Waldo Emmerson....I still don't believe everything I read. Sorry if I have upset you, that is not my intention. This is just my explaination. Thanks, Jess

Jessica,
I understand being skeptical, so was I, but I was willing to try for my daughter. I have spent the last year reading and trying to understand what Robert Young writes. I have a friend who has a six year old almost seven who has also been following the same program with the same results. He was diagnosed with type 1 last November. She has been corresponding with an Endro. that recently left his practice. I understand he left because one of his very sick patients became well following a natural path under his supervision. Of course, the medical doctors did not like that because it is a booming business for them. I am not trying to step on any ones toes. As for me, I am not trying to sell you anything. I want to share our story. I am willing to talk to anyone about this. As for my lack of information. I will look back at my profile and see if I can share more. I am new to this computer thing. I do not have one at home unless my husband brings his from work. I homeschooled my daughter four years and now she is in school. I have had extra time on my hands and began going to the library during the day to play on Webkinz and started looking at diabetes websites. I have a family history full of diabetes. My grandfather lost his leg and life to diabetes. Most of his seven children have diabetes and some of the grandchildren. I think there is about 14 of us. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes while pregnant with my daughter. A few years ago I was diagnosed with type 2. When I follow the program and have had a GTT, the test results are normal, if I don't follow the progam my sugars go up. We do know that type 1 and type 2 are completely different. I am also familar with what medical doctors call a honeymoon period. My thinking when I came across the book was, "what if it does work"? I wanted to know and I was willing to try. Lizzie, the reason I responded to Jess is she was asking if going vegan helped glucose control. She was also asking about book, recipes, and websites. I have bunches of great recipes and tons of information in my head that I am willing to share. Maybe one day you to (or two) will understand why I am so passionate.

Hello Jess and Lizzie,
I hope you both are having a great weekend. I made sprouted lentil burgers today and when I checked my daughter's blood sugar two hours after it was 83.

Hi, I've been a vegetarian for almost 17 years now, actually before I found out I was diabetic. It can help somewhat w/ glucose control since many vegetarian foods are lower in carbs. than other diets. Like some other people mentioned though, it also depends on what else you eat besides veggies (rice, bread, pasta) that are generally high in carbs. Overall, I'd recommend the vegetarian diet for all the good vitamins, and anti-oxidents you get from a lot of veggies. Just be sure to supplement it w/ vitamins you may need, like B-12. Good luck!

Dear daisycolours
As I understand it, Type 1 diabetes very roughly is where the body destory the islets of langerhans in the pancreas and this cannot be reversed, the cells as far as I know cannot be regrown or repaired. This is why type 1s need to inject insulin to replace that made by the cells. So how does eating a strict vegan diet affect this? Does this man claim that the diet makes the cells regrow and start producing insulin again? How does it work? I can see it may have some effect for type 2s, for some of them diet is their only treatment and their condition is different to type 1, their islets still exist and are producing insulin but their bodies are not recognising this. But can you explain how it works for Type 1s?
