My fella is type one and i am glad to say i have never seen him have a hypo/hyper, occasionally he will say 'my blood sugar feels low' and grab a sandwich/energy drink and hes fine after that.
He does seem to handle it well but a few things raise questions with me... He doesnt seem to take his blood suagr every day, although he says that he is in tune with how he feels and when he takes it and im about it is often almost spot on. He eats quite well, plenty of english grub and such, but he has a huge sweet tooth. He will eat big pieces of cake and say 'its okay bek, my Novopen will just need more insulin this time' is this right? I also wonder if it really effects your diabetes depending on how quickly you inject after eating. Thanks guys, i just love him so much and im not sure how to help him with his condition. This also for people who have loved ones with the the disease n need of support so no worries u are welcome here, HUGGERZ. As far as not taking sugars i can't advise my daughter is only 9 she was diagnosed at 5 so she is far from that if it is possible.
With him eating a huge amount of cake and referring to his novapen, don't worry it's regular insulin and will kick in, in about 15 minutes sometimes sooner. It sounds like he has it together but it's hard to say not knowing his A1c. I think it's wonderful ur concerned, maybe u should talk about what to do if he does happen to bottom out and stuff. That way u will feel informed and he will be covered in that area, it will most likely not ever be needed but an ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure! hope this helps

I can only speak from my own experience, this may be wrong for your bf. But I was in denial for years and did not take blood sugars and I now think it is very important to do so.
It is fine to eat anything in moderation and if you take the correct amount of insulin for the carbohydrate in the food. But you also have to take account of your blood sugar at the time in case you need more or less insulin. It should not affect your blood sugars too much as long as you inject close to when you eat, before or after.

my daughter can not eat sweets at all with out extra insulin. Even a "light" juice with no sugar raises her sugar way to high. a 15 gram carb snack is all when she is low. I make her follow it very strict.

Update: He went to the docs for the first time since hes been with me to get his regular checkup -Liver function tests, Kidney tests etc and everything was super duper and fine..
Is this a good sign? he went through a 'screw this' phase when he was 14, is it likely his body has recovered well?

It is so hard to say as things are different for different people. I have heard diabetes called 'the silent killer' since although everything may seem fine it may not be. I went through a similar phase and it is one of my fears too. Having said that, the technology they have to check people, especially eyes, is so sophisticated that they would pick up a lot more now than they ever could before. I would say that as long as he takes his blood sugar and acts on it regularly as well as attending all hospital checkups, he can continue hoping for the best. The most important thing in diabetes for me is self management - having the knowledge and confidence to adjust your insulin and food yourself and deal with highs and lows.

i know you're worried about him...but really times have changed, yes diet is important.....but with pens and pumps now, as long as you count your carbs, he really should be ok, this kind of flexibility with eating and insulin is really what keeps diabetics from going crazy,,,,,,trust sometimes it really feels like you live in a very small veggie bin when ppl are all up on you about what you eat all the time...sometimes causes you to rebel even more....

with all the advancements in the field i would be less conserned with what he`s eating but would worry about not doing bg tests. i test 6 times a day and fix any high results immediately.

I have to say that your bf is pretty lucky that he's fine, but it can be different for everyone, but I truely think that everyone that have this illness need to at least know what he BS count is before you decide to eat a large piece of cake. I can eat a piece of candy and my sugar is sky-high, but for the next person it may be different. But I think that anyone with diabetes need to stay away from the energy drinks, they have loads of sugar in them, that's what keeps you going, the sugar. But I was in denial for about the first 5 years of my diabetes, you couldn't tell me that I had sugar, I wouldn't listen, and would eat any and everything I wanted, until after years of doing this I finally because ill and was in the hospital for 9 days.
The Novopen is a wonderful thing to have, but it's not too good to go on and eat loads of sugar and then just inject yourself with more insulin, that's an excuse for us to go ahead and eat cake, but no too good. But he really needs to at least get a Blood Glucose meter and just test hisself at least once a day, then he would know where his sugar is for that day. I would do the same thing too, but it caught up with me. Last year I started having problems with my right eye, I was seeing little spots in my eyesight, this happened on a saturday night, by that monday morning I was completely blind in that eye. I had to have surgery in my eye to get my sight back. My retinal had detached from my eye and I was bleeding in my eye, and the surgery was pretty rough, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Thank God I have most of my eyesight back now, but I had to go through a whole year of surgeries and medications to get it back, and it was all because my blood sugars were out of control for some many years. You take care.
