I am thinking I may need to up my zoloft mg dosage or change antidepressants. I don't have great medical insurance so money is tight. If I would up it 1/2 of pill would that be harmful without the doctors advice? It cost me $95.00 for a visit to ask this. I don't want to cause some wierd thing to happen with the midication if I do. Opinions please.

" Can you call on the phone to ask? Most US doctors would up the dosage over the phone for free. You would have to go in to change to a different one. "

" It's worth a try. I think 25 is the lowest starting point, but you should ask a doctor to be sure. "

" I am glad you brought that up. I just did 1/2 a pill more than my usual 75 mg of effexor. It helped me sleep today when I needed to. I know better. I have called my doctors RN before and she gets with him for advice. You won't get the doctor but ask for his RN. My docs RN may take a few days but she does respond. Foolish me will make a call to. Good luck "

" like others have said, it would be best to call the Dr's office to be sure, but i have done this in the past as well depending on the dosage you are currently on i would not up it more than 1/2 at a time on my own. For example if you are on 50mg a day i would split a 50 so that it is 25mg and add that with the normal 50 tab. "

" Unfortunately, even if it were a good idea, there is a built-in problem with doing that. Upping the dose on your own would cause you to run out sooner. When you tried to renew, there could easily be a refusal. If not right away, then eventually. Then, you really have a problem, .. sudden cessation.
I don't think a phone request to your doctor to have him consider a dose increase would even be counted as an office visit. Cannot hurt to try. Call, speak to his nurse, and see what happens, but don't do anyting the doctor does not preapprove. Don't self medicate, to any extent. "

" Incidentally, I had very good results from Zoloft, so make sure you give it a good chance. So have many others I have talked to. It has a pretty good record of effectiveness. "

" I don't change the dosage of my medications without discussing it with my doctor first. I always want to get his approval plus I worry about running out of meds too early. With my anti-depressant I can't change the dosage because it is a trans-dermal patch and the only way to change it is with a prescription. Plus, I don't want to increase it because then I have dietary restrictions because it is an MAOI and I have enough restrictions with it as it is. "

" Thanks for the good advice. I did realize I would run out of meds sooner but didn't realize it might mess up my refill. I did call the doctors RN and she will talk to the doctor and get back with me. Hopefully later today or Monday. I will wait to see what she says to be on the safe side. "
