" I have had months of my life that I devoted to meditation and it was very effective. Unfortunately, I don't have the discipline a lot of the time to keep it up.
Also, pay attention to which type of meditation you are doing. I did zen meditation where I focused on the vowel "om" for a while. I got really good at it and one night I was transported to a gray void. It really freaked me out and I was put off of meditation for a while. This only occured when I was meditating for a couple of hours, though. "

" Meditation is Great, and after a lifetime of study I can see how people get confused. Some say take a mantra and repeat it for a 20 minutes, or an hour, or say it 23 or 108 times...If that's what works then just pick a positive word....Happy Happy Joy Joy....
Patience patience patience. Even when I wake up, wake up in the middle of the night, or go to sleep...through out the day...what ever works..."I am loved, I am loved" Some meditations want you to clear the mind, and we find that the Monkey mind jumps from tree to tree, thought to thought...so we just observe and bring it back to the still calm pond...the breath, bring it back to the breath. I loved Vipassana... where you scan the body....start observing the breath coming out the nose, and the vibration on the lip. Take the awareness to the top of the head, and slowly bring the awareness down over the head, and down the arms, and all the way to the toes, and then back up to the crown...this can take an hour at times....The idea is that since every cell has a memory, and can bring up emotions and past thoughts, we just observe what is happening, try to not react, and bring the awareness back to the body part...oh yea, I was on the knee, now down to the chin, and the ankle... etc. Pick a focus, a word, or a body part and just bring the attention back to that.... " Thich Nhat Hanh has a wonderful meditation in his ART OF MINDFUL LIVING:
WHere you say something to yourself after each inhale and exhale:
INHALE, "I am alive"
EXHALE, "I smile to myself"

another one:
INHALE, "I am mountain"
EXHALE,"I am strong"

and I love,
INHALE, "I am water"
EXHALE, "I see things reflecting...
seeing things reflect how they truely are...
are say "I am calm"

Just ad your own words on an INHALE AND EXHALE....do it three times....
ANd then continue on with your day...it really helps slow things down for a moment of calm....
:o) "
