I went through a very difficult depressive
episode. It is like my mind and body was shutting down. I had suicidal thoughts,
but I kept in mind the devastating effect
my suicide would have on my friends and family.
Life can be fullfilling. For me I had to
be proactive which is not in my nature.

I have had the mindset that life will never improve. It has taken me a great deal of effort
to deal with and understand setbacks that have occurred in my life. Life is short and I have
to take one day at a time. You or loved ones
could be alive one moment and gone the next.
Here are some strategies that have helped
improve my mindset. I still feel I can
grow and improve as a person. Eg more self
esteem, not worrying about what others think,
letting go of past failures.

1. I got therapy. See my doctor twice a week.
This helped me understand what was bothering
me in life.

2. Try to forgive others who have wronged you.
I hated my stepdad a long time because he
left. I have forgiven him for this. He also
had medical problems. It is okay to be
angry. But the anger should not ruin your
life.

3. Develop a daily routine. One of my issues
is getting out of bed in the morning.
However work and activities helped me get
my mind off how bad I was feeling.

4. Take a vacation or pursue your favorite
hobbies. I took a vacation and my mood
improved. Exercise helps as well.

Depression wants you to sit around and
feel angry and sad. That is how it wins.
When I am alone doing nothing is when I feel
at my worst.

" Thanks Wandering Vet. It helps me to be around
others. Also you hope to find a medication that
works in order to assist in the healing process. Though only a psychiatrist can decide
if you need meds. It is also very important
to be honest with the doctor so you can
get proper treatment. "
