Anyone taking effexor notice weight gain, problems managing weight, or anything of that nature?
Most of the drug's official literature says little or nothing about it, but I saw a doctor commenting on another site that about 30 percent experience this side effect. About the time I first began being treated for depression I gained 20 - 30 lbs in a month. My doc ruled out serious thyroid problems, tho the numbers were a bit off and another ER doc told me I was prehypothyroidic or hyperthyroidic, or something like that. I continue to have bloodwork done and nothing is ever said about thyroid problems, but I simply can not lose weight even tho I am on a healthy nutrition program. I feel like it may have something to do with the medicine, but I really don't want to stop taking it because it works so incredibly well on my depression. Posted on 03/12/08, 02:03 pm |

yes i gained alot of weight when i started taking this.....i was able to lose the weight though after i got stable on the meds..don't go off them hun you can lose the weight it is just harder to do....

If you do change meds, get help from your doc to wean off. I found when I missed doses of Effexor, I had numbing, tingling sensations in my head. That can't be good.

yes the side effects of effexor withdrawl are horrible.....i know when i miss a dose i feel like i am being shocked......very gradually be taken off this if it is not for you...

I got some pretty major weight loss from Effexor. I dropped 20 pounds in abuot 3 weeks. Probably just from how much it upset my stomach. But now I am going off of it, and yeah withdrawl is not fun!

I gained 40 lbs while on effexor along with some other undesirable effects. I was going to the gym religously and all I could lose was 10 lbs. If it works good on your depression thats good it made me worse so I stopped taking it and I lost a bunch of weight no problem.

My doctor told me once that depression meds kind of numb you so therefore you don't worry as much about what you eat. I don't know if that is true but I do know that no matter what depression med i take I gain weight. I couldn't take it anymore and stopped taking them and am doing great on diet now

I take Effexor and have gained weight but I think the reason for my gain has been comfort eating. When I'm feeling low or someone/something has upset me I reach for the chocs and anything sweet.
During the last 2wks I've managed to stop eating chocs etc and have lost a few lbs, so I don't think it can be the meds in my case anyway.
