Methadone

I am currently trying to get off of Methadone. I am down to 3 ml's in the morning and 2 ml's in the evening. I go down 1 ml every 4 days until I am completely off of it. I have been told that Methadone is the strongest pain med on the market, however, I have found that it did nothing for me. And now I am stuck trying to get off it cuz it is highly addictive and causes major withdrawls. Surgery is not an option for me as I was told by my specialist. What meds would be the best for my pain? I have all types of pain. Today I had to call off from work cuz my pain level was too high. I have Degenerative Disc Disease, 3 Herniated Cervical Discs with Bone Spurs, and 2 herniated discs in my lower back. What other meds will at least help take the edge off the pain so I can function (and work) everyday. To top all this off I am bipolar and have major depression as well as a couple others. Any Sugestions?

" I'm so sorry to hear that you are in so much pain and feeling so low x I am really lucky i only have cervical issues and i thought they were bad until read this x I wish i could suggest something but the only thing i could think of was the Morphine patches, i forget what they are called. Ow wait i think they are called phenaton patches. I have been told they are quite good. I know a few people that use these but for slightly different things. They find them really good for the pain x Sorry i could not be of more help x x

Hope you find something soon to help you x x x "

" I would not suggest the Fentanyl patches. I used them for 4 months & went through pure hell coming off of them. The benefits didn't out-weigh the withdrawals, and staying on & working daily wasn't an option, your body just becomes tolerant & needs more & more. I opted to have several epidurals, then facet blocks & I've just had radiofrequencey neurotomy which gave me great relief. I've gone through this for years, and am finally getting relief. don't give up, but don't just keep letting them give you more & more pain meds...at least, not if you want to remain functional. Good Luck!!! "

" I also have had epidural shots they are painful to get but seem to work. How about Morphine in pill form. Just watch the dosage because it can make you tired. Hang in there ok. "

" Ugh, get off that Methadone. Have you ever tried biofeedback for pain? I am checking into this as I can't take pain meds-got addicted. This is a miraculous thing I am told to manage pain. "

" Every time I see a letter like yours I thank god I got off that stuff. I had a pain mangement doctor who had me on the patch, morphine, methadone, and then tried to put me on Oxycottin when I said NO!!! I would be all loopy from this stuff and go somewhere and my pain would be a 10 on the scale and here I am all loopy. All it did for me was make me loopy but not get rid of the pain. I found a new pain doctor who has me on neurontin, tramadoll, and Ultram ER. It works because I am not all loopy now. I still feel the pain and somedays wish I hadn't woke up but at least I am in my clear head and not all loopy. I told that pain doctor if I kept on I would be in some drug rehab in 5 years so I am SO glad I quit taking that stuff. Good luck and I will keep you in my prayers.. "

" Coming off of methadone is not easy. I take Ultram and flexeril and use lidoderm patches. I do have vicodin in the house for my really bad spells. I don't take it often, but when I do take it I know it's bad, because I want to go to the ER. You have alot of the same problems that I do, but most importantly, address the depression. That is a big side effect that goes along with chronic pain. I know alot of docs us Elavil. It is an antidepressant but also helps with chronic pain. It also helps you to sleep because people with chronic pain also suffer with sleeping problems. Good luck and keep us posted...Blessings...missourigal "

" You need something specific for nerve pain like the tramadol janinem suggested. I use that and it's great b/c I have not found it to be addictive and I can function on it. The lidoderm patches work for local pain. And maybe you should get a second opinion on the surgery. Your pain sounds unbearable. Also, Moonflake is right about biofeedback or maybe acupuncture. Good luck! "

" We have the same spine problems (3 cervical, 2 lumbar, , bone spurs and herniations--i have 5) and i have major depression and take an ssri. they gave me methadone as well which did little for the pain, but caused me to gain 15 pounds in about 3 months. i was switched to percocet (vicodin) and kadian (time release morphine). roxicodone is the same as percocet without the acetemenophrine in it since you are limited to 1000 mg. a day of that. it helps a bit. you can also try ms contin instead of the methadone.

hope that helps.
