what happens to vein

I had a DVT in my left leg from my groin all the way down to my ankle. It happened about 10 yrs ago when I was 2 months pregnant. It took about 3 months to dissolve. Does anyone know what happens to the vein? Is it totally ruined? Does the blood still go through it or what? I now take a baby aspirin every day and I always wear a compression stocking only in the affected leg. I only take it off to shower and swim. Although, I don't like to keep if off for too long because I am terrified of getting another one.

Thanks

" I had the exact same clot four years ago. I did 6 months on coumadin, then an aspirin a day. I did not have any genetic reason for getting my first clot, but a couple months after discontinuing coumadin, I got another one in the same vein. I went to see a vascular specialist who explained that there are tiny valve like structures within the vein that help the blood flow in the proper direction and can be damaged when you have a clot the size of mine. Your blood still flows through the vein, but probably not as well depending on how bad the damage to the vein was(I don't remember all the details, because I was very mad that he was telling me I should be on Coumadin the rest of my life and there was not much he could do for me. So anyone else please explain further, as I would be interested to hear more also).

Basically gravity has a larger effect on my blood flow in my leg after my DVTs. I am a lifer on Coumadin, and only wear a compression stocking when I am going to be sitting or inactive for long periods of time. Everyone is different, so it is really a up to you and your Dr. to come up with a treatment regimen that you can live with. "
