Some of you might remember me, haven't been on for a while. I got my DVT when i was 18 last summer, in my left groin/leg and PEs to my lungs. They put a filter in my vein and i had to take warfarin for 6 months. I came off the warfarin in April and the filter was taken out in Februrary. Recently i have been going back to the hospital for tests on my blood and i also went for an echocardiagram (sp?) to check my heart. Anyway, that came back normal, but the blood test results were abnormal in that the 'Protein C & S levels' are lower then they should be. I had tests done when i was still on warfarin and the result has doubled when i had them done 3 months after coming off it, so the doctor thinks it's just the blood getting back to normal but should it really take that long? Anyway they've re-tested and told me not to worry, and i'm going back in a couple of weeks. If they're still abnormal or not increased i'm going back to see a haematologist and i'm also gonna ask about the possibility of May-thurner syndrome as the pain originated in my hip and i still get hip ache today even though the doctors haven't suspected it to be anything serious.
Does anyone know what low levels of Protein C & S mean and whether there is a possibility of May-thurner syndrome? If so, what is the treatment for this? Thanks, Jenny Posted on 07/16/08, 05:07 am |

Jenny,
Here is some info about Protein S: http://www.fvleiden.org/ask/50.html And some more info that also discusses Proten C: http://www.fvleiden.org/ask/49.html If you have your lab results and let me know the levels I can bounce them off a thrombophilia specialist for interpretation. When I had my son tested I knew he was going to inherit my Factor V Leiden. He is also MTHFR (homozygous). The pediatric Hematologist said he also had Anti-thrombin III deficiency. When I read the reports to several friends who happen to be physicians who specialize in clotting disorders they said his level of ATIII was not significant enough to warrant worry (in other words he had levels above normal, but not necessarily high enough to be considered for having ATIII clotting disorder. Regards, Tom

Ok, is factor v leiden the same as protein C or S deficiency? I had both at the same time! But he said it might be because the results have been counted wrong or because i only recently came off warfarin (but not that recently).

No factor V and Protien S and C are not the same. Right now my doc is pretty sure that I have protien S deficency. I'm going to get re-checked in Feb 09. I had just given birth 19 days before my DVT/PE and that can affect your protien s levels. Mine was 16 at the time. Its supposed to be above 50 something. Hence the reason they are pretty positive that I have it. I just hope that I didn't pass it down to either of my kids.
