Tests for PE

I was wondering what tests are available to check for a possible PE after DVT. I was diagnosed with DVT behind my left knee almost 8 weeks ago. Since the diagnosis, I have suffered from nearly constant anxiety about a possible PE. I did have a CT scan about 2 weeks after my diagnosis and my lungs were clear at that time. I have occasional tightness/mild pain in my chest and I find myself out of breath after walking short distances. I also have had an on and off cough for the past 3 weeks. I know that I am most likely just being paranoid, but I can't help but worry that these could be symptoms of PE. I don't want to have another CT scan just because of anxiety, so is there a less complicated/invasive way of testing for PE? I have read something about a D-dimer test, but don't know much about it. I really appreciate your advice and input!

" D-dimer is a blood test -but my doctor told me that it is useless if you are on Coumadin or other anticoagulants. A CT of the chest is probably the fastest way to get an answer, There is also a test called a V/Q scan or ventilation/perfusion scan tha tis done in Nuclear medicine in the radiology dept. It usually has to be scheduled. "

" I agree with flipperclot. The D-dimer is usually the test ordered to determine if there are clotting issues, however, it is not the all determining factor. A lung scan, as mentioned, is the best way to determine a PE.

Tom "
