I'm buying my first pair and was curious if anyone had any websites or suggestions about where I can find them for the best price.
Second, I see that the options are below the knee, or to the thigh -- I'm guessing they need to cover the area with the clot? My blood clot was right behind my knee, so I'm assuming I need the thigh high, can anyone confirm this? Thanks guys! Posted on 07/10/08, 01:07 pm |

My clot was also behind my knee, and my doctor told me it was ok to wear knee highs. I do also have thigh highs, so I can wear skirts. It's the pantyhose I can't deal with! I get my hose from a local medical supply store, which is necessary in order for my insurance to pay for them. Have you checked to see if your insurance pays? I bought my first 2 pairs before I found out my insurance paid for them.

Mine were prescribed to me and the first pair was actually delivered to the hospital. The company that I get mine from is also local. Have you asked your doctor what s/he wants you to wear? That's what I would recommend as a first step along with checking with your insurance like DogLady suggested.

Most medical supply stores carry them. The key is to get properly fitted for them.
I had a serious of clots from my ankle to my hip. Initially I wore thigh-high's but switch rather fast to knee-hi's (Dero calls them Fuglies, I call them "manly-hose)... I know some folks who order theirs from the following website: http://supporthosestore.com/ The like the service there, but I have to say that I personally haven't used them. Do check with your insurance company though to see if you are covered, they may recommend a medical supply company or store. NATT's news letter (http://www.nattinfo.org/Newsletters/Natt_Newsletter_Spring_2006.pdf) talks a little about compression stalkings had has the websites of the major companies designing them. I did stumble upon a company who makes therapeutic compression stockings that looks like dress socks and actual pantyhose during a seminar I attended. If I can find the business card I will pass that information along.

OK guys, I had a PE in Oct 07, never found where it came from. I have never been told to wear compression stockings, but am thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea since I have 2 clotting disorders and am on coumadin for life. I am a nurse, so it wouldn't hurt to have the extra support for standing and running around on those long 12 hour shifts. My legs already look like crap from standing a lot at work, and then there is the added attraction of all the bruises that I don't know where they came from due to the coumadin. Are varicose veins a set-up for a clot -I would imagine so. Anyone have any info on that? How much do these "fuglies" cost anyways?

I don't remember who recommended this website, but I ordered from them & just recieved mine today. I am very pleased with the service and prices. Previously, I had been getting mine from the vascular doctor's office at $40 a pair (VENOSAN brand closed toe thigh high 20-30mm hg) which was a good deal compared to the medical supply store. I got a different brand, ALLEGRO, from Bright Life. I paid $83 for 4 pairs ( mix of open toe, closed toe & sheer (ha-ha)) They seem to carry quite a few brands of knee high, thigh high, & pantyhose. They have both men & woman's. If I got to wear them, I would rather not go broke buying them :} Remember, you really need to get the style and strength from your doctor. Make sure that you check the size charts, they may not all be the same.

I have varicose veins, and had surgery for them. That was what led to my DVT. I've been told that varicose veins are a risk factor for DVT, but I know lost of people with varicose veins (they run in my family) and don't know anyone who had a DVT that was a result of the varicose veins themselves. Before I found out that my insurance company paid for my fuglies, I was paying about $50 for a pair of knee highs. My mom's cost more. It does depend on the type and amount of compression.

Thought that I should point out that the $83 was the total cost including shipping for 4 pairs of thigh highs.
Someone pointed out to me that they thought it was $83 each pair. Fortunately not. Sorry for any confusion
