Wanted to post a recent important study making the lay press
JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Dec 13th issue published a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials looking at folic acid supplements in patients with prior history of vascular disease (coronary artery disease or stroke). The findings of this study suggest that folic acid supplementation is INEFFECTIVE in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases or Mortality in this group. This included LARGE numbers of patients and while it is a bummer Folic acid doesnt reduce risk I think its important because it tells us to FOCUS on strategies of PROVEN BENBFIT (smoking cessation, cholesterol reduction, treatment of hypertension and diabetes, physical activity) Dr O. I do take folic acid, but not for my heart. I take it for Porphia and Sweets. We adjust the dosage by checking CBC routinely.

I have a question about omega three acids. They are pushing this on talk radio. These are preventing the build up of plaque in the arteries and clearing out existing artery plaque. Why are they allowed to say and sell this stuff without proof. I would think if this was such a miracle supplement nobody would have heart disease.
