Ok my 7 year old niece underwent her first surgery when she was about 6 or 7 months old! they only sticked up to her nose and didnt go fullly into it. She has learned to wishle through this hole in her nose!! her scar is ok but some times her lip goes fat some times is that normal? she has had many thing done to her mouth, she has had a thing on the top of her mouth to make her jaw not to shift any more, and now has a retainer in. She is going in for a second surgery this year to get the top of her mouth in (a chunk of bone from her hip will do this) and they will be repairing the stich soo it is fully fixed! about time hey, the only reason for the delayed fix is that she has had perfect speach sense she was about 2... and by that i mean she was saying sentances clearly at that age ( she doesnt even have a lisp) Unless you look at her scar or in her mouth you would never know by the way she speaks that she has this problem!! do any of your kids speak perfect and have had more then one surgery!?!?!

" My child is 18 mths, has had both the cleft lip and palate reconstructive surgeries, and will also have the one with the bone taken from her hip for her upper jaw at age 8. So far, she is speaking really great, no lisps, or "nasal" speech. It just depends on the extent of the clefting of the soft palate, and how well the repair heals. If it doesn't form that seal at the back of the mouth during speech, it may still allow air to pass through, causing a slight "nasal" effect. "
