my five year little girl just had her second surgery yesterday. any advice to help with the cleaning of the stitches go more smoothly. she really freaks out and screams and hits me which i cant blame her for i would do the same thing but it makes it really hard to make sure her wound stays clean and i dont what it to get infected or anything. ideas anyone i cant stand holding her down to clean her stitches it kills me to have to do that and she hates me for it it.

" I apologize for catching this so late. The only advice I can give isn't something you'll like & neither will she. You know what has to be done, & you know why you're doing it. Explain it in terms that she can understand & talk to her while you hold her to clean her wounds. Trust me, my parents had to do that with me, for verious procedures. There aren't any lasting scars & it didn't change how I feel about them. I still think they're great. They were just doing what they had to, & you're little girl will understand that one day to.

" I was a young adult when I had most of my surgeries. My surgeon had me put peroxide on a q-tip. It didn't sting a bit, but then I wasn't five! I hope you can find the right solution. "

" Surgeries are definitely tough and I am sorry you have to go through this. If this gives you any comfort know that it's harder on you than her. My mother in law was very helpful in every aspect, emotional and with surgery advice as my husband was also born with a severe bilateral cleft lip and palate. That is what she told me and it really helped just remember that kids bounce back really fast and this too shall pass. I know it sucks and I've only gone through two surgeries so far. I just saw the cleft team a couple of days ago and ufortunately we have alot more milestones to reach. I am a new member and am very excited to have people to share with. Good luck with everything and may God bless you and give you strength. Sincerely another mom of a special kid ;) "
