Conflict between Pain meds and Sex

Hi guys. Warning: this is pretty candid talk following and as tactful as I am going to try to be, some things can't be "flowered up" they simply need to just be said, so please don't be offended.
I have recently switched from Duragesic Patch to Methadone. I was down right angry at first, but the switch really has been beneficial. My Dr. was uncomfortable increasing the fentanyl every two months, but felt we had more potential for increase with the methadone. The half-life is longer and therefore it remains in the body much longer than the patch, and has basically eliminated my need for breakthrough meds. However, the constipation (which I can deal with...fiber, stool softeners), and difficulty urinating are quite bothersome. But the erectile and sexual dysfunction are most aggravating. Now mind you I'd rather be out of pain, but now that I feel better, I'm now up for more tasks (ie: sex). I have tried E.D. drugs and they don't really help that much since achieving erection isn't the main problem, it's maintaining it, or finishing the job, if you know what I mean. It's takes forever, but by then my partner is pleased, and we're both are ready to call it quits. So most times climax isn't achieved. Can anyone relate or have any advice? This is a very intimate issue that requires a great deal of communication and give and take from you and your partner. The meds interfere incredibly with a range of reactions;no response to immediate response! It can be extremely frustrating for both people! My best advice to you is to keep the lines of communication open with your partner and experiment-it doesn't always have to be intercourse. My husband was extremely nervous with every new medication they tried with him (the fentanyl patch being the worse)-making love is more than the act of intercourse, although that IS a wonderful culminating act! This whole ordeal (making love while being medicated) has brought us to a deeper level of communication, love and respect for each other and our bodies. Relax, light some candles, put on some music, and enjoy holding and loving one another- the rest will fall in place in time...xoxoLyn

Methadone killed my libido, weaned off of it, took one month. Pain was the worst I ever had. Went back to MS Contin which is much better, but at least the desire is there, and when the spirit is willing it is amazing what you can achieve.
It doesn't hurt that I am married to the most wonderful, sexy, and desirable woman on Earth.

I am a female - but I'll add my comment to this. I am going through the female version of this. I am on several pain meds after having both a spinal fusion and artificial disc replacment. Prior to the surgery I had a very high sex drive and me and my fiance had a great and active sex life. The pain meds have ruined it. I have the desire in my head, but can no longer get physical excited. The "sensation" down there is gone, I have practically no feeling and my desire to become "wet" is gone as well. We can use a lubricant, but it only helps him and not me and I honestly have no feeling - its as if its numb. I have not been able to reach an orgasm in months. If I dont take my meds, the sensation returns but the pain is too much for me to want to be intimate. Its a horrible place to be to have to choose between pain and intimacy. The docs dont seem to have much to say on this topic.
