Gabapentin / Neurontin

Hi All,

I just wanted to ask peoples opinions on this pain med. I just started it almost two weeks ago for the pain in my hip/leg/lower back.

Did/do you have any side effects whilst taking it? I seem to have been lucker than i have been with other meds so far (i usually end up very nauseous, dizzy and generally feeling worse than the pain by itself!) ...

I have to work myself up to 600mg 3 times a day, right now im at 300mg 3 times a day and my only side effects seem to be tiredness (but im always tired anyway!) and a constant sore throat, i wake up every morning and my mouth is so dry (on the inside) its painful - has anyone ever experienced this side effect with GAbapentin/Neurontin before?

It is listed as one of the "less common" side effects but i just wondered if it would go away in time - or if it would be a permenant thing whilst taking this medication.

Thanks for any advice/help you can give me! :)

" I am also brand new to Neurontin (5 days) and I have not really had any side effects. I am on a super low dose right now and that might be why. There is a really good discussion about this in the Neuropathy sub group. You should check it out. Hope this med works great for you and gives you much needed relief. Hugs. Lora "

" I took it for a little while, did alot to help my lower back pain. As for dry mouth, that is comman with most pain releivers, that is why your dental care is important. (Mouth stays dry, teeth go bad.) I have a problem with edema anyway, and my legs swelled while taking neurotin, but otherwise it was great.

Lorarose, do you realize that cat is attacking that baby? Ouch! (lol) "

" I'm also new to it. I had to stop it due to all the symptoms I was having from other illnesses. I couldn't tell what was due to medicine and what was due to the illness.

I HAVE heard very good things about it though. "

" I'm glad it's helping you. I've heard it can help a lot of people, and that's great. I was in the minority that these drugs did NOT help. I tried both Gabapentin and Lyrica, and they were AWFUL for me. I yhad extreme tiredness as well as mood changes (not as happy). They did not help my pain, but hopefully they'll you.

" I did very well on Neurontin and didn't have the dry mouth you mention.

However, when gabapentin came on the market and my insurance company insisted I use it because it was the generic of Neurontin, it was awful. The pain came back and I became suicidal. I went back to the name brand, fighting the insurance company all the way.

Two years later, my dr. forgot to write "name brand only" on a script and I got gabapentin one month. Within two weeks, it happened again - pain and suicidal thoughts.

I never stayed on the gabapentin long enough to find out if the side effects went away. "
