Elavil

Just this morning I was officially diangosed with migraine headaches. The neurologist I saw wants to put me on Elavil. Given that it is an antidepressant as well, I am reluctant to take it. I am afraid that even though I am taking it as an anti-migraine medicine, it will cause me effects of the antidepressant even though I am not depressed. I would rather not have that.

Any feedback about side effects, how this drug has affected people psychologically who are taking it for pain, or results for the pain would be appreciated.

" Thankfully I have migraines only sporadically...and Imitrex helped greatly with those. Cost prohibitive, though.
I've never had Elavil prescribed for migraines, but it was prescribed for my back problems.

I'm with the others on this one...Elavil was a nightmare for me. HATE the stuff. Just the tiniest dosage knocked me for a loop, and kept me that way. I literally slept my life away, which only served to aggravate the back problems further, since I rarely got up and moved around.

My current doc suggested it, and I told her no way I could take that stuff. Luckily for me she listens to me.

If it works for you, GREAT. Personally I have nothing but bad to say about the stuff.....Becky "

" I am Elavil now. I have been on it for 8 months! It has not helped me at all; except I tacked on 26 pounds and the sweet tooth. I am in the process of getting off of it. It didn't help my migraines at all. I hated taken it and I didn't want it in the first place but my neuro said "just give it time". I finally found a doctor that would listen and is getting me off of it! This new doc has prescribe Topamax, so we'll see how that does. Elavil is cheap but for me is was a nightmare!!! "

" I was given Elavil years ago for chronic headaches, from my neurologist. I guess it helped me.....this was a long time ago. However, I've been taking Elavil for my (current) chronic pain at 100 mg at night. I just take it, hoping that it helps and works. Hang in there!!!! "

" I took elavil once, I think that was the very first antidepressant I was on, made me to drunk to get out of bed, but that was 20 or so years ago. "
