Elavil

Just this morning I was officially diangosed with migraine headaches. The neurologist I saw wants to put me on Elavil. Given that it is an antidepressant as well, I am reluctant to take it. I am afraid that even though I am taking it as an anti-migraine medicine, it will cause me effects of the antidepressant even though I am not depressed. I would rather not have that.

Any feedback about side effects, how this drug has affected people psychologically who are taking it for pain, or results for the pain would be appreciated.

" I have frequently seen people treated with elavil for migraine headaches. In fact my roommate currently uses it and it has helped her a great deal. It works with 2 hormones in the brain plus at the low dose that it is usually perscribed at for pain and headaches does not usually have the side effects of typical anti-depressants. It is definately worth trying. I do not know the mg you were prescribed the doctor I use to work with usually prescribed 25-50mg for pain and headaches. It may end up having to be used in conjunction with another medication. And it definatly is cheaper and has with stood the test of time. I also feel like it is safer than some of the other treatments for migraines that are currently being advertised. It is usually used to try and prevent migraines. But every persons migraines are different, and respond differently to medications "

" I've used it for migraines, sleep disorder and chronic pain. Besides being a little tired and gaining some weight from developing a major sweet tooth. I can't tell you any other effects. It's pretty clean. My migraines must be vaso related because inderal works wonders and I've d/c elavil. "

" I replied to your message about this, but for everyone else.

I have never heard of Elavil for migraines. Elavil constipates and dehydrates. I took it for depression and sleep during my first marriage. Elavil sucks.

Ouch "

" I take Elavil for chronic pain , been on it 2 years,. it does not do anything for my pain, but it does help me sleep and acts as a sort of anti-anxiety , it DOES cause SEVERE dry mouth..if you do this see your dentist often and keep water handy all the time, I know someone who had horrible dental problems due to this med...I have not heard of Elavil for migraine, but I have for chronic pain,,fibro...I do not have depression and this anti-depressant did not create symptoms of depression for me...
Hope this helps, and I would like to kindly suggest a second opinion on the elavil for migraine thing, if it were me I would consult another doc... "

" I have tried and my daughter has tried elavil. Neighter one of us had any luck with it. She developed bladder spasms and problems while on it. She was taken off and then given another med for the bladder spasms. I don't know if that result was typical. I was not comfortable taking metadone at first. I held onto the prescription for a bit before filling it. Now I am on my second prescription and see a difference. I am not saying that it gets rid of my pain. It does help though. I have breakthrough pain and deal with it but have noticed that there is a slight change. I have had a prob sleeping though. I seem to have difficulty going to sleep and once I do I wake up off and on. I also have horrible dreams. Even though all this is going on I enjoy the slight relief that I get most but not all the time. I have had chronic pain for years. Weighing the pro's and con's and making a decision is not easy to do. You have to do what your heart and body tells you to do in my opionion.I hope you well. Elavil has helped some people. I hope that you have better results. I understand all too well what you are going through. In the end it is your decision. Like I said it is only my opionion. "

" Have to go with the flow on elavil, one of the very first meds I was put on, YUK, for chronic pain and depression, talk about medication hangover, and not being able to focus the next morning. And, did nothing for the pain or sleep. "

" watch out for dehydration, constipation, hallucinations and all the other-tions. i hated this med. How about Topamax or Imetrix. Another great one is Midrid it relaxes the stress right out of ya. I have 100mg Imetix so i can split them. You only get 9 per prescription.

Hope it helps.

Ouch "
