Caregiver Assistance

Every caregiver needs assistance and relief on a regular basis. However, in many cases we struggle to find help and relief. In my own case, it took several months before I found available help. Here are a couple of suggestions for you:

In Illinois where I live, the state provides Caregiver assistance through each county health agency. We can get limited respite relief paid for through the state, via the county health agency, along with caregiver counseling. The county agency also provides assistance through numerous local organizations specific to a disease/handicap. So check with your county/parish health agency for assistance. Some states help, others don't.

Discuss your needs with your church pastor/ministor/priest. In many cases, they may know of a church member that would volunteer to give you respite relief at no charge or mimimal charge.

Check with your local hospital. They may have a list of CNA's that would assist you in respite relief.

Don't get overwhelmed with caregiving. Look for and get assistance when needed. You must take care of yourself first. If the caregiving is tearing your family apart, eliminate the caregiving. You must protect your family since it will be around for years.
If that means putting your hands up/ gun down,
then so be it.

" Thank you for your comments. I have a hard time using respite care because mother wants me to do it. I have taken a stronger stand with her lately cause I have been doing this for 8 years and now 2 1/2 full-time in my home. She doesn't always like it, but you are right, I need to take care of me and when I do I'm better for her. "
