my fiance applied at a bank, compass bank. we both bank there, i was wondering how is it legal for the banks to check ur credit to determine to see if u responsible or not? a digit doesnt determine whether a person is responsible, i think thats another way of discriminating just to keep ppl from getting a bank job.
my fiance has financial problems, the job he is currently at, safeway, isnt paying him enough to pay his debt off from compass. he does owe money to telecheck, which is what compass bank goes through when u owe money. i told him he needs a job that is gonna pay him over $10/hr if he expects to move out and get a car. the pay he is getting at safeway, he can barely live off. is there a way u can fight if a job doesnt hire u based on ur credit history? that is none of their biz about ur credit history. another question is for those of you who had/have government jobs, what kinds of jobs can u get if u dont have ur degree or dont have any gov experience (besides the post office)? my bf has some post office experience, but that was only xmas casual. he needs the money bad so he can go back to school. gov jobs require that u have a 4 yr degree in order to get the job. we live in AZ, this is a do nothing state! meaning the state doesnt wanna spend any money to do anything yet alone fix anything. there is no way we can move until we have our finances straighten out and have our degrees. jobs are scarce here in AZ, nothing here but crummy low end jobs. his current job, he is barely getting any hours and he cant keep living like that. this seems to me to be a more common practice for employment background checks and is not just limited to bank jobs. as with all jobs it depends on what sort of background checks a company chooses to do, but i don't think its fair to check credit since you might be looking to make more in order to afford to pay off your debts. good luck

i mean i know its common to check ur criminal background yet alone if u r responsible for paying ur bills?!? since when does that determine for employment?!
that reminds, i told my bf to tell the branch manager that he needs to pay it off, come to think of, maybe he shouldnt tell him that cuz like u said they might see that as u need a higher paying job to pay off ur debts. thats the only way he can pay it off if he gets a job over $10/hr. when it comes to debt, what tips do u have that u know of that u shouldnt mention to the branch manager? especially if u owe money?

Sorry, but it is perfectly reasonable and legal for an employer to check your credit when financial intergrety is key for the position.I believe you have to sign a statement accepting the bank or company to do the check. If you don't want the check made, you don't have to apply. Many government jobs requiring a security clearance check credit because this could be issue someone may use against you to steal state secrets. A bank will especially be interested since if your bf will be dealing with money, they may have concerns on vulnerablity as well. On the plus side, your bf can always explain why he is in the financial pinch he is in especially if he can show he has a plan to improve his financial situation. The bank may or may not accept this, or possibly if they want to hire him, place him on probation. Another plus, a lot of people are having credit problems now. Your bf's credit may not be as bad as other people applying. However, it is a tight market, and just as employers will look at education, experience, and references to weed people out, a credit score is another tool to use.

another way of getting into ur personal info and discriminating if u ask me. i dont want any employer goin through my credit, its none of their biz. ur credit isnt part of the skills you have/need for the job.
true, he could explain that doesnt mean they will accept it or not. i mean if u r showing them u want to make a change, i dont know why employers dont hire u. its like they would hire a lazy ass than an honest hard working person. he hasnt been paying his debt to telecheck cuz like i said his pay at safeway isnt paying him nothing. u cant pay ur debt back if u r not gonna get paid shit. ive heard ppl on tv that are furious to hear about jobs checking ur credit! i put on my applications i didnt want them to check it in the past! the gov might as well ask ppl to tell them what they do with their finances and how they invest their money ya know? lol got any good interview tips for a bank job?

Empoyers now do credit checks in case you might steal off them or customers cos you are buried in debt. Also do general serches as to court actions, disputes and collatable info. Its going to get lot worse now we are in a recession and yes we are.
