Welcome...I have only been diagnosed since May 10 and have found lots of answers and hopeful inspiration from new friends. The hardest part for me is adjusting to a whole different mindset. Learning how to slow down is the big challenge.

Welcome. Glad you joined us. I am on Chantix and quit smoking 6 days ago.
The chantix is a big help. Previously I quit smoking for 3 years, smoked two, quit for five years, then started back up again about two years ago. I have quit hundreds of times in the last two years. I suffer from Major Depression and Anxiety disorders; so whenever things get too stressful----I just start smoking again. This time feels different. I want to quit for good- forever. I wish you luck on your quit, and hope you find lots of help from all the nice folks here.

Greetings dolores - it is very difficult in the beginning to stop smoking and the shock and coping with COPD is not easy.
I do wish you well. I stopped smoking over 3 years ago when I was first diagnosed, I did go cold turkey as I was really worried that with every cigarette I continued to smoke I would damage my lungs even more and at that time I only had 50% lung function, without medication and was finding all activity very difficulty. However since I stopped smoking my lung function has improved and whilst not every one is as fortunate I regained lung function to 85%. I also attended a pulmonry rehab which I feel is essential to helping ourselves and understanding COPD. I have benefitted from COPD medicine also. I used to drink a glass of water or suck on an orange every time I wanted to smoke. I would go out for a walk too and I would suck on Trebor xtra strong mints. I would read about all the positive aspects of stopping smoking and about all the nasty toxins and chemicals in cigarettes that are harmful to the body. These were the procedures I used to help myself when I was stopping smoking. I do hope you will notice significant improvements real soon. Good wishes

Welcome to the group, I am relatively new here, also! The smoking cessation has to be one of the most difficult things we face upon learning of our diagnosis. Hang in there and don't expect miracles from yourself!
