How long does it take for your newborn to poop? My 7 week old son will push and grunt hard for up to two to four hours before anything comes out.

I went through this with my daughter several years ago. At two weeks she completely stopped pooping and passing gas. Her rectum ended up being too tight. We had to manually 'poop' her until she had surgery done at 12 weeks old.

Now my new son is showing signs of this, but he's a trooper. He doesn't cry as much as my daughter did and he manages to poop and pass gas, but after hours of work. So what is normal amount of time for pushing?

" my son is now 17 months and when he was born at the time we didn't know he allergies to cows milk anytime i would drink milk or ice cream he would have a hard time pooping he would cry at the time i was working as a nurse so i know something was wrong i would sit in the bath with him and let him poop that way it did seem to help a lot warm water situlats the anus so the waste can pass easier. so you might want to try that also you can take your two finger and rub your babies LEFT side of his tummy after starting with the left side work your way around the tummy rub up to his ribs and down it sounds funny and unreal but it works. you can also try the food game take out different foods that are in your diet one at a time and one that you eat alot and see if that seems to help. " Great! Thanks for the response. I will take milk out of my diet and see what happens. I'll also try the massage and bath. I would like to avoid the same surgery my daughter had when she was 12 weeks old. At times I think it was not necessary -- I really think suggestions like yours should be tried first. Thanks for your time. "

" Thanks for your concern. He has managed to dirty two diapers a day over the last three days. This is a major decrease from the almost 6 to 8 dirty diapers just a few weeks ago. I feel so sad for him when he pushes and grunts for so long without much progress. I cut milk out of my diet, soaked his bottom in warm water, and I've massaged his belly several times a day since reading your first response.

One good thing, he hasn't completely stopped pooping and he doesn't scream bloody murder like my daughter did.

It's funny how our lives are so centered around counting poopy diapers and timing naps, and cleaning leaky milk! "

" WHEN MY SON HAD TROUBLE POOPING, I WOULD PUT 1/2 OF A CHILD SIZE ENEMA IN HIS LITTLE BOTTOM, THEN..WHEN HE WOULD GET READY TO POOP..I WOULD STIMULATE GENTLY W/ A QTIP ..{ IT WORKS} UNTIL ALL EMPTY.

I WAS ALSO TOLD BY A NURSE ONCE ...2 SIT HIM IN A LITTLE TUB W/ A LITTLE WARM WATER & BAKING SODA FOR 20 MINUTES, IT HELPS HIM GO :) "
