Have to go to Glasgow tonight, it's about a 6 hour drive if traffic is good (and with the current weather, that's unlikely). I have no way of getting there other than to go with stbx.....that in itself is not the problem, I figured we could talk about some of the less serious stuff, what to do with furniture and the like....
The problem is, there is someone else traveling with us. He's a nice guy and all, but is known for putting his foot in things and he really doesn't pick up on subtle hints or tones of the room. So at least 12 hours (there and back) in a car in a potentially horrible situation! Here's praying for a smooth ride.... Posted on 05/16/08, 05:05 am |

Take a book on tape or cd or download and listen in your earphones. Won't have to deal with either one of the guys.

Maybe don't discuss anything with stbx with yhis guy in the car. I agree with #1. Take a book to read or listen to music. Good luck.

A possibility, but it does go against wrestling road trip etiquette...
Besides, other guy will probably fall asleep less than half way, going be previous trips, (etiquette no-no, without permission) so will need to talk to stbx to keep him awake and alert at the wheel kinda thing.... As long as everything's kept light it should be okay.....but once in Glasgow, there are a whole lot of people I haven't seen for AGES (due to starting business) who are my friends and stbx's friends, and I have no idea if they know that we've split up.... and to top it off, I've twisted my ankle, stupid rain making puddles :(

This is so simple if he puts his foot in it tell him to shut up. I've found that people who are oblivious to subtle hints are generally ok with direct statements. You don't have to say it in a mean or nasty way turn to him, smile sweetly and say "can you shut up now and try talking about something else?".Practice in a mirror. They will get upset if you say it nasty or let things go silent.

Trust me, i have no problem with the direct approach with this guy, but he's the kinda guy who takes things personally all the time and would probably get the hump no matter how nicely you could put it. Oh well.
My plan is to steer all conversation towards random neutral topics that can do minimal damage....and wait for him to break etiquette and fall asleep :)
