depakote and sedatives

so my friend who is in a nursing home went to a psychiatric hospital 6 mo. ago. he is suffering from a tbi, but was sent there for outbursts and anger issues and refusal of letting the girls wash him. he was verbally, mentally, and physically abusive to staff. he came back heavily sedated, and was placed on depakote and a sedative. well he is totally out of it and they just increased his doses. he gets to the point where he can't even hold his eyes open long enough to eat and drools excessively. i have him telling the nurses he doesn't want his meds. he is at the point where he is refusing it from all shifts. he tells them that he does not like how it makes him feel, like a goofball and always tired. does this mean that he is going to change his attitude towards me. staff is saying i need to watch myself that he does not lash out. i am the only one he confides in and actually talks to. is there another means other than psych meds that can help him. he doesn't want to talk to anyone but me and has major anger issues with just about everyone! am i wrong in supporting him to not take his sedatives???

" He really needs to have a GOOD doctor evaluate him to get him on the right meds. The bad part is that until they get him on the right meds and he is stable, most likely anything can happen.
That really angers me that they are doing this to him.
I have been punched in the face several times by Thomas when he "flipped" out before his meds were stable. I did not get angry nor did it scare me away. I knew that it was the brain injury.
Now I am not excusing that hitting is OK, but you have to give someone the right "tools" as the saying goes so that they can try to be as productive as they can. Man, I wish that I could offer more... "

" Before encouraging him to tell everyone he doesn't want to take his medicine, it's important to consider why they put him on it. It could be treading in some dangerous territory to give him the idea that if he doesn't like the side effects of a certain medication he shouldn't take it. "

" The biggest mistake anyone can make is to put someone with a TBI -ABI on the wrong medication's.

I think Tim needs to bee seen by a good neroligist asap.

I know he has been put in that home because of outburst's ect ,, but
were these outburst's there before his injury ?
If not then it is a direct result of his injuries and really shouldnt be in a psychiatric hospital .

It is a shame that there isnt enough rehab places world wide for people with a brain injury .

The medical system world wide needs to do a lot more training about TBI and its daily effect's on those that are trying to recover from such an injury.

I totally understand him not wanting the meds that make him so doped out all he can do is sleep.

Its a pitty that the nurses that are looking after him dont take the time as you have to get to know him.
Are any of the doctors there trained to deal with a TBI?
I think not but maybe Im wrong there!

I can only speak from personal experience ... but i was stuck on drugs i didnt ask for or want for 2 years ,,, after finally getting enough self essteem and mental strenght i made the dicision to stop them all,And i am much much better without them!
I think so much clearer and my anger is My girl says better without the drugs , and i know she is right.

That doesnt mean Tim should stop taking the drugs ,(thats not my point).
my point is doctors are not right every time!
Far from it in my case.

Get a nero to see him and if i were you id be getting him a second opinion from a good doctor that can come there and see him.

Try to get Tim to see that his angry outbursts and lashing out at the staff will only cause them to stick to there ways ! As hard as it is i have learnt over the years to not yell at spit at doctors they dont like it!
if he can keep calm and still be treated like crap then he will have a better chance of a good doctor or neroligist to get him on or off the meds he needs.
And with any luck get him out of that awful place he is at at present.
If his sister is still staying away and has no power over him.A power of atterny might be the best option , that way whoever that may be can stop these people druging him to the hilt.
Also just a thought , maybe print out some fact's about TBI and get them to the manager of the place ,It might work.
www.tbiguide.com has heaps of info .
it might not work but gee these people really sound like they need some training.
he has a mental injury !not a psycho.

best of luck and say hi to Tim from me .

" Why don't you give him a chance OFF the sedatives? I am a little younger than he sounds, but when I was hospitalized I refused the meds mainly because I felt like I was being forced to take them.
Maybe if he felt like it was his decision, he wouldn't be so aggressive. "

" daz, what can i tell the nursing home why he should see a neuro. i suggested neuro feedback, and they shut me down right away. the only thing they are worried about is him taking his meds, and how i should support it. well i don't and i won't, he is so much more alert and able to feel now. the only thing that worries me is his anger, will he ever be able to deal with that or control it??
