Hello everyone. I am new to this group.

I am a 39 year old female living west of Toronto.
I was diagnosed and hospitalized with a closed head injury in early 1990. After hospitalization for about a year I went on disability, and a couple of years after that I tried to go back to work.
I went into denial about the severity of what happened to me. For the past eighteen years I have struggled greatly with cognitive issues. By adopting a "short term" approach to everything, I have somehow managed to get to where I am today.
However I am bottoming out. I have not been able to maintain any employment or job for any amount of time due to the cognitive problems and all that goes with it. I very recently re-applied for disability, and am trying to find support to help me deal with my issues and challenges. I have been looking at such programs as those offered by March of Dimes and a couple of other brain injury assosciations - so far I haven't actually talked to anyone but I am hopeful to, next week.
I have only begun to accept the truth about this disability - emotionally and mentally I'm feeling pretty shaky. Now that I have finally stopped "getting jobs" and am seeking recovery and treatment, I am very afraid of "falling apart". I have a few friends but no close family.
If anyone has any advice or suggestions, or services they would reccommend, I would greatly appreciate anything in regards to this.

" Thanks for the reply. I am looking at having to make a few very big changes, and trying not to get overwhelmed. Affordable housing is an issue, and I may have to take the homeless/shelter route for a while. I also am pretty sure I am going to give up my vehicle, it's just impossible to afford it unless I go and get another job. Which at this point, is no longer an option. It has become easier to consider letting go of these things than to continue to try to maintain them. "

" What do you hope to do?

What do you mean by falling apart?

If you mean not being able to make it emotionally and or Financially ? I know it is so hard , even harder with a tbi. Try to make life simple; prioritize, find something you can do with your hands to help occupy your hours will help you feel like you are accomplishing and helps keep calmness; i crochet prayer shawls and paint.

Hang in there, hugs. "

" Thanks everyone, for the replies and messages.
Today was a much better day, I think I have the housing issue resolved.
I have to say, despite the stress and worry I was feeling around making some big changes, I have also felt a huge sense of relief since I decided to seek treatment. "
