i have a question. my mom has brain cancer (GBM) - they were able to operate and remove most of it. she has one day left of radiation and will remain on chemo.. the doctors told her she shouldn't drive a car.. is that normal? other people who have gone through this...did you drive..do you drive? she lives alone and finds it very difficult not to drive..so any advice will help.
thanks!! Posted on 05/02/08, 12:05 am |

My mother couldn't drive right after her surgery for about a month or so... but as long as she didn't have seizures they said she could. She drove for a long time before her tumor came back

I believe it all has to do with seizure risk. WHen I had my one and only I was not allowed to drive for 6 months according to the DMV, and now every year my nurologist has to send ina letter stating it is ok for me to drive. the risk is worse than having the right to drive. I know it is hard, but better alive than dead or killing someone else.

I agree, seizure risk is very high post-op (don't worry about her, it's normal). The neurosurgeon can explain the reason why better than anyone here. Depending on the laws of where you live, she may be able to drive again after a certain while. I had to give my licence back - sucks, but better than having a serious accident that could hurt others.
