If you are under 55 and over 18, PLEASE consider signing up. I recommend DKMS. They send you a swab in the mail! No pain of course. Postage is all paid. They only ask that if you have the means to do so, send a few bucks or whatever you can.

Thank you so much for this post. My husband was diagnosed in 2001 with pre leukemia and converted to AML in 2002. He had 1 initial chemo and 3 consolidations..He went into remission for almost 3 yeras before the AML came back. His only hope was a transplant. Lukily for us, his brother was able to be his donor. My husband was 100% donor cells and even converted to his borthers' blood type. He had beaten the AML with the transplant. Unfortuanetly, on Nov 2, 2007, he passed away due to a rare virus that can affect AIDS and transplant patients due to their suppressed immune systems. By being his donor, my brother in law gave us 18 more months with my husband, and I thnak God everyday for that. So, please, please, consider signing up. You just might be able to save a life!

I am donating bone marrow, but they need to make this easier. I am having to take about a month to do this, I live out of town and they have me running all over the city, last week they told me it would take an hour, well it took four hours, they took thirty one vials of blood, then wanted me to drive in Dallas rush hour traffic to the other side of town to give more blood to Carter blood center, I wish they would have had a representative there to check out my veins, collect the blood and ask me the questions they needed to ask.
I also have found that I am not being told the truth. I was told it would take "a couple of days" and now we are well into thirty days (total), they said I could have the shot then I was free for the day, that is not true, they have to test the blood every other hour, then they said they would give me shots for four days and harvest for two, and now they are saying six days of shots and three to seven days of harvesting. I dont know about most people, but staying at a hotel for a week is expensive, traveling back and forth is too, not to mention the things I keep finding out, that I have asked and was told I would not have to do, I do have to do. I hate it that it is so messed up and I am sure alot more people would donate if it were not such a freakin nightmare. Like, why cant I get my dr. here to give the shots? Why cant the blood center here test me? Why cant we do the meetings by phone? It is frustrating.
