What's your purpose?

My PHP therapist asked me what my purpose was.
I was dumbfounded. I just gaped like a damn fish.

I used to work and that was my purpose. If I went out and made money and paid my bills, all of my shortcomings seemed unimportant because as long as I was making money- I could pretend that everything was ok. Like the alcoholic (or abuser) who says "It's not as if it interferes with my job".

So what is your purpose? I could really use some feedback/ideas/examples. I don't even think I really know what a purpose could be without a job anymore.

" hi I am new here and you have hit the perverbial nail on the head for me. No longer can I define myself as a chef working 10 to 16 hour days gaining satisfaction from just that paying bills drinking alot! and doing the same thing the next day. I now have to look at f...ing balance. I don't want to I liked the unbalanced but feel good way I was living only it didn't work out and I was either to dpressed to work or to manic it was not fun. If you ever find your purpose let me know because I am searching also. Cheers H "

" well, for the longest time, in my 20's and 30's, I wanted to save the world, now I just want to save myself and be kind and productive... that makes the world a better place, if you are kind, responsible, and you give back "

" My purpose is to let my cats in and out the door all day at their whim, or they will scratch their claws on the aluminum, and drive me nuts.

I think it is good to have goals in life, and that may be what your therapist is asking, but to think you have only one reason for being here, is kind of anti-therapeutic.

Maybe you could ask your therapist to clarify what they mean by that statement.

It is easy to misunderstand what others mean sometimes, because you don't even realize someone might mean something entirely different when they say something like that, than you think they mean.

That is why one really good communication tool is, to repeat back to someone, do you mean, ".....whatever you think they mean..." when you are not sure. Or just ask, what do you mean by that?

It takes work if you're not used to doing that, because if you're not used to it, usually you just try to answer without thinking of questioning the meanining...and that is sometimes how things get really bent out of shape and you start talking about two entirely different things. "

" maybe our purpose isn't supposed to be something real big. maybe our purpose comes from a bunch of little things added up. such as opening a door for a little ole lady, or choosing not to squish to bug on the sidewalk, or maybe just once, to stop and smell the flowers in the flowerpot. maybe it doesnt have to be working 40 hours a week, may be that purpose is for someone else, and not for us beepers. and maybe just maybe, that 40 hour a week job isn't for that person either. " Finding purpose, how many times have I thought about it. I really don't know what my true purpose is, but I have a feeling it has to do with NOT what society tries to portray as normal.

I am saying I am BP for a reason.... I am emotional, intense, honest, caring, and kind. I am also insecure, fearful, hurt, and suffer bouts of emotional pain so strong that it becomes physical....

But seriously, don't know where you guys are from in the world, but here in America, we have gotten desensitized. To everything.

It almost had me. I was numb to myself for many years. Now I am not. Maybe my simple purpose is to help others, and treat people the way i want to be treated. And that is a tough job. "

" Mine was to create my art, to live a spiritual life and be a good husband and father.

I am left with the art and being a father.

Sometimes my purpose is to survive the day so in the future I'll have a purpose again. "

" I'm sure what she meant, it was a question after about half an hour of talking. That makes it even harder for me to answer hehe. Good points tho, and I do need to remember to ask for more clarification on things in the future. I assume tons.

I guess my purpose is to love my husband, enjoy the day, find productivity in what I can, stretch my abilities and try to accomplish things that are hard for me to do. Oh and feed the Super Bun Bun and the cats. Maybe pet the DH ha. "
