I am having issues with my current employer (not directly BP related). I have been looking for a new job and I am struggling with whether or not I should disclose my being a beeper to my new employer.
I disclosed it to a previous "employer" when I worked for my church but my boss was also my Pastor so I believe he was more understanding than most bosses. I have read on DS about other people disclosing it but I am afraid. I need to find a job fast and don't want people looking at me as if I am a time bomb waiting to go off. Has anyone ever disclosed it and then not hired? How about someone that waited to disclose it, were you later fired? Any other scenarios, good or bad? Posted on 07/01/08, 11:07 pm |

depends if federal job then it can be a benifit since you qualify under the americans with disabilities act private business probably best not to tell they still are held to the rules of ADA and EEOC but there are ways around that. for them. My rule is generally "don't ask don't tell".

Keep in mind that if I become overly depressed or manic, I may need to ask for Medical Accommodations which requires me to reveal the reason. If I reveal it after the fact, they may feel deceived...

Why tell? You don't discuss medical problems w/employeers.

You are under no obligation to disclose your medical condition prior to be hired. If issues come up and it becomes necessary, let them feel deceived.

They can't fire you for a disability, it's illegal. I say look for a job in the non profit area that serves others with problems. I told my employer why i had a lapse in my resume when I didn't work.
She hired me. She said the reason was because I was so honest. The key is to find the right boss and job who understand you won't always be "unstable" let them know your healthy and want to work, but you can't have a breakdown later and then tell them. Although, they still can't fire you. Pray to attract the perfect job and perfect boss.

I thank everyone for their thoughts and advice but do not be deceived:
You CAN be legally fired for having disabilities. There is this little loop hole for companies that allows them to determine if your disability prevents you from performing the basic requirement for a particular position (which is determined by THEM). Also, they can come up with any OTHER reason to let you go and say it had nothing to do with the disability. He said / She said. The ADA meant well but there are too many loop holes...I don't mean to be so negative but I guess I'm a bit discouraged. At my current job, I asked for accommodations for the foot pain I've been experiencing and because I have been having issues with my Epilepsy. The owners called me in for a meeting where they yelled at me and told me I was being unreasonable. They were irate and wanted to know why I didn't notify them during the application process. They even hired an HR Specialist to advise them on the matter - and all I asked for was to be allowed to sit down when I needed to. Now they are transferring me to another location (attached to the home office). Obviously it is so they can keep an eye on me and look for a "valid" reason to let me go.
