I don't know what to do anymore. My mom has been suffering from a mental illness for nearly twenty years now and has recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She has an ear infection that has spread to the bone and hypertension that she will not get treated because she believes that a doctor is coming to the house to treat her. Her delusions are interfering with her medical treatment. Everyone I speak with says there is little to nothing I can do. If she refuses treatment than it's her choice until she hurts herself or someone else. There's a line that makes my stomach churn in disgust each time I hear it. She obviously is not functional and there is nothing I can about it. Does anyone know of anyway I can get her benefits without her?

What exactly to you mean getting her benefits without her?

She is risking life and limb - surely you can involuntarily commit her. You might have to talk to someone ahead of time to explain all the subtlety. It's not straightforward, and that may be the reason why everyone told you there's nothing you can do. The psychiatric clinic would not be able to treat her infection by themselves, and people have a tendency to tune out after 3-4 sentences anyway.
You are definitely entitled to talk to her pdoc and explain what's going on. You can leave a message, send a fax to their office... They can't give YOU information, but you can give THEM information. With their help, you may be able to get her commited.

My mom was involuntarily committed to the hospital for eight days. She was released today. I called the hospital and they told me she has the right to refuse any treatment because she was voluntarily admitted. I'm not sure how it was voluntary. They did not let her leave until now. I've always been under the impression that if you were in the hospital voluntarily that you could leave at any time. I'm not sure how this all happened. I want to be able to get my mom social security disability benefits and medicaid for sure. She believes she has insurance coverage (delusions again) but she does not. she will never agree to fill out paperwork for any kind of assistance. I also spoke with the guardianship commission and basically learned that if she can understand the guardianship process that she will be appointed a lawyer and I will have to pay for it. He said it could easily cost me 10K. I'm currently supporting my household as it is and there is no extra money whatsoever.

i am confused. is this about your mom or the money? even if you are voluntarily commited they still have to deem you stable to be released, because you came in stating you had a problem with yourself or society.

This is about both my mom and the money. I dont' know where to start. It seems you have to take all the steps in exactly the right order so I don't know what to do.
