Lamictal and Sun Exposure

I've been on Lamictal since 6/27/08. No problems with the medication since I started, but 2 days ago I started indoor tanning and now I have a rash on my stomach. I know that I'm supposed to watch out for rashes when taking this medication, but it's really mild and almost certainly from the tanning session rather than an allergic reaction to the medication. I've been searching the internet for answers and came across a website that listed all medications that were "photosensitizers" and Lamictal was listed. I was wondering if anyone taking lamictal had noticed increased sensitivity to the sun.

Also, I know that tanning isn't good for me. The reason I'm doing it is because I'm going to Cabo San Lucas for my honeymoon in September.

" ohhhhh yeah. Most psych drugs make you photosensitive. Takes only 5 minutes for me to get a tingly sunburn. "

" I've been on Lamictal for a little over a year now and here is what I know. When I first went on it I was coaching softball and I burned through my cloths. Even when when I thought I was all covered and in the shade I had to pull my sleeves over my hands. I can't impress you with how terribly it hurt. And yes, I was burning.

If I were you and I didn't want a rashy or burnt honeymoon, I'd get the highest SPF you can find and wear cloths that cover you and a hat. not sexy I know, but unless you want hubby rubbing your rash, cover.

Sorry to be so honest in my opinion. That's just how I call it. "

" I also take lamictal. I also have worked in a indoor tanning salon for many years. It sounds like it is most likely a heat rash, which is really common. I am adivid sunblock wearing person as well. I notice my face has been more sensitive to the sun since I have been taken it. I was using just a 15 spf on my face, now I am using a 40 spf.

I think a fake tanner would probably be safer for your skin. Like a gradual tanner always works for me. If you do continue to use the indoor tanning, keep in mind. The amount of time you are in there, and how intense are the bulbs that are in that bed. Tell the person at salon you are burnt a little last time you went in. Ask to be put in the bed with the oldest bulbs, or a bed that is not so intense. I would think for only four minutes to five minutes, every other day. Increasing your time by 1 minute every other session.

Also to help your skin, make sure you are using a lotion with collagen it after tanning. If you are using a tanning booster when you go into bed, I would skip it. Those products to help boost your tan are filled with chemicals that could irritate your skin. After exercising your skin is also more pron to the sun, because the red blood vessels rise to the top of your skin. Which would be good it you were a avid tanner.

Always make sure to wear sun block. Epsically on vacation. A sun burn always runins a trip. At least a 15 or higher. If you are out for a long period of time the higher you want your spf to be. Buy the good stuff to, it is worth it. "

" I tan and lay out in the sun (I switch between the two depending on the weather) and have been for years. Just began Lamictal few weeks ago, but was also on it a year ago and did not notice any problem.

I am with the last person who commented, I think maybe you went for a bit too long. Don't give up, just change the amount of time. But, if you have never tanned and it keeps up, you could be one of the people the warning talked about who's skin can't tolerate the sun and the medication.

Good luck, B "
