Pdoc did a whole re-arrange of meds on me the other day. Dropped me from 1800mg lithobid to 1200mg; added Abilify 5mg.for 1 wk (on day4 feeling NO effect whatsoever), upped Topamax to 125mg from 100mg, left wellbutrin xl at 300mg., left atenolol and synthroid alone but I am getting ready to start my period and this is not a good time for my lithium to be dropped without something to take its place. I am feeling VERY edgey and like I could easily go off. I am trying hard to control it but it isn't easy. He also put me on ambien but it hasn't worked at all. Anyone on Abilify...how long before you felt any effects from it? Also, I'm TERRIFIED of getting FAT from it!

" It took me less than two weeks, but it seemed to have a couple of side effects both minor. one it made my leg shake almost uncontrollably. I got some stuff called trihexilphenedrine for parkinsons symptoms and in a very mild dose it has worked great to stop the twitching, they say it can become permanante if not treated.

And it seems to make me cycle more rapidly but not to very big extremes. My valium helps to control that prettty well. "

" Abilify can work quite quickly. I notice a difference within days.
Abilify and Geodon are supposed to be the most weight neutral antipsychotics, I've read. I haven't gained weight from it yet, but I've heard some people say they have. At least it won't be the huge weight gains like Zyprexa can cause. "

" You are on a low dose of Abilify and from what it sounds like is your doctor is titrating it slowly. I would give it approximately two to three weeks to feel any full effect. I started on 15 mg right away and felt really edgy and didn't sleep very well, but I felt great...but it did take a couple of weeks.

Hang in there and good luck. "

" I started on 15mg a day and it only took a couple of days and I felt great. A good manic. I was all of sudden brimming with energy and I quit crying. Have been stable for 2 months now. I love it. As for weight gain I don't know because I am on Depakote which is famous for weight gain and hair loss. Good luck just try to stick it out. "

" Thanks everyone. I hate feeling like a lab rat. He put me on ambien to help me sleep and it does NOTHING. My SIL said the dose was too low (5mg) and I should take 2 but she isn't a doctor so I pretty much said whatever because she usually isn't the sharpest tac in the box if you know what I mean anyway but I do plan on asking the doc about it. " For me, Abilify worked pretty quickly and I didn't gain any weight on it. With the Topamax upped, you may even lose weight. Abilify is meant to lessen mania not increase it so you shouldn't feel too manic on it. It helps my hypo-mania decrease but that is just my experience. Good luck! "

" I came off depakote and went to abilify and lost 80lbs the feeling it seems to cause is sorta like mania but it really is just feeling good if you can relate. I have toruble with it keeping me awake too so I have to take it about 3 hours before I plan to go to bed. but it really does help the mania from getting bad I am on 40mg started at 20mg "
