I took Lithium about 15 years. Thirsty, thirsty, thirsty all the time. Sometimes I would get to the point that I felt like I was breathing salt. (At that point, it might be good to get a blood level checked and make sure you aren't toxic.) It did contol my mania pretty well but did nothing for depression.

Becareful to drink alot. I was dehydrated and hospitalized once when I was young, but it is an effective drug. The old standard. Get your liver and kidneys checked at least once a year. Just ask ur dr for a test but they should order them reg anyway if ur on lith. Maybe some weight gain but thats common with any anti-depressant. Avoid too much sun and u should be fine. Good luck!

Been on lithium about 8 months now. I think it does an excellent job with my mania but little for my depression. I agree with the other posts drinking lots of fluids is definitely important. My drug doctor sends me for level and kidney tests every few months.

Just started it about a month ago. It has done wonders for me but I'm also on a bunch of other meds. Only side effects I have experienced are thirst and some fatigue, which have been lessen each day. Just be sure to get ur level checked every so often. ur PDoc will tell u when to go and get ur level checked.

The first time I took it I had no side effects at all. I just recently started taking it again (2x my previous dose) and I am thirsty all of the time. My hands are VERY shaky. I also have been more tired than usual. Another thing that has happened since I started taking lithium is I have developed hypothyroidism that is more than likely caused by the lithium.
