Lamictal doesn't cause Weight Gain in Patients with Bipolar Disorder
From The Science of Mental Health

About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by our Medical Review Board
- Results from an analysis presented today show that long-term treatment with Lamictal(R) (lamotrigine) is not associated with clinically relevant changes in weight when used in patients with bipolar I disorder compared to placebo. The results were presented at the 157th annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in New York, NY.

The data reports on the long-term impact of mood stabilizers on body weight. Weight gain is an area of concern for psychiatrists and patients in the long-term treatment of bipolar I disorder. It has previously been reported that side effects such as medication-related weight gain may have a negative impact on compliance. In fact, medication compliance is considered to be an essential component of the long-term management of bipolar disorder.

" THANK GOD!

Because ....

I was put on Depakote and gained 30 pounds. Once I went off the doctor smiled, "The weight will just melt off you ...."

Well, it didn't. Took me years of struggle to get it off. Finally got it off and the bastard put me on lithium (after I told him NO MORE FAT MEDS!).

BOOM! Blew up 30 pounds. Plus the lithium did not personally help me. It only made me shaky and I fell a lot.

"Well, once I take you off the lithium, the weight will just melt ..."

Yeah, yeah. That was last October. I am still a house who can only wear sweats. Watching my diet and exercise (and now I am sick with chronic ailment) don't do anything.

NEW meds doc wants to put me on lamictal.

I really could not stand another 30 pounds added to my already depressed being. Especially since these meds are such a hit and miss with me and most seem to miss. "

" Lamictal is weight neutral.

Topamax is known to have the side effect of weight loss for some. "

" While Depakote made me gain 20 pounds, I am now stable on Lamictal . Thank God! And the 20 pounds are stable, now. From the depression, I had been 108, so, at 5'3, that is waaaay below average. Now I am enjoying realizing how this weight is good for my body and what's real interesting is my change of thought of how much men like a woman with curves. They DO NOT see the cellulite! Which my body has. "
