I think you should say what is most comfortable. I have heard some folks say "lost" "passed on". My son Tony went on a motorcycle ride 09/09/07 he died as a result of the injuries suffered. The motorcycle flipped and he was crushed ...blunt force trauma.

I really have no preference. 'died, dead, passed on, passed away, lost, crossed over', they all mean the same thing. I know sometimes people are uncomfortable with using some terms to describe death. I think it's up to everyone to use whatever words they prefer.

i say 'crossed over'. i like the image and sound of it. the only thing that dies is the body, and to me, the person still lives, because, to me, we are not our bodies. its just a transition, so i call it crossing over.

I would prefer to say passed on because they have passed on to another life.

I prefer died, dead... everything else sounds like a pointless euphemism to me.
I hate that it happened, but they did die. Wherever they are headed, whatever I believe; they are dead. I suppose the polite terms are more acceptable, but I really don’t get the point. Good manners I guess.

When my brother rang me in the early hours of the morning to tell me that "Dad has passed away", I was eternally grateful that he used those words instead of "dead" or "died". I don't know why I feel like that, but the latter words seem cold and hard. I say "passed away" too. I am sorry for the loss of your father Tigerz43.

I too prefer passed away, it just doesn't seem as harsh. yes, my parents are gone, and that is harsh in itself. Guess it is preference though.
