I was in a motorcycle accident in 1987 and did major damage to my spine. I've had two spinal fusions in my neck and have arthritis throughout my spine. I am now having major pain in my lumbar spine and pain down my left leg. Noted weakness on left side of my body. I'm on too many meds to name but the most helpful I'm on now is 120 mg MS Contin 3x per day. Oxycontin was the most helpful but because of costs the VA system will not prescribe it. I was told that I'm not a good canidate for the pump. I've been through and have tried everything I can find including self medicating with drugs and alcohol. My liver is giving up (HepC). What else can I do. HELP!

I have had 3 back operations with not much luck of the pain being gone. I had a spinal cord stimulator put in on Sept 11 2007. It is remarkable how much pain it does relieve. You can regulate it yourself and it may help cut down on meds. It only stops the pain from hips down or so. Maybe you should look into it. It works for me--I was at 9 pain level 24-7. Now on a good day I am at 3-4. I can live with that!!

I've had 4 spinal operations [not trying to compete] and am presently on Methadone for pain control. It does help some but I'm still in quite a bit of pain, it only gets the edge off so I can "get through the day". I've heard about the spinal cord stimulator and glad to hear it's helping you. I'm going to ask my doctor if I'd be a candidate for one. Thanks for your input.

Hi ~ If you haven't had a recent MRI or CT scan of the lumbar spine, I'd ask my doc for one. Since you state you have weakness and major pain going down into the left leg, it sounds like you have some nerve impingement going on. You don't want to leave that left untreated too long. Perhaps therapy could help, or some conservative methods other than surgery. At any rate, it needs to be checked out in case you have a herniation or disc bulge.(s)
I pray you get some relief to your pain. I know how awful this whole ordeal is. Best of luck and God bless. Hugs, Lee

Have you had any recent MRI's done or any other xray type testing?
Ask your physician about having you go for an xray myelogram, nerve conduction study and/or a electomyography... Hopefully somemore testing will pinpoint the problem and have a good solution. pain in your left leg sounds like sciatic pain. So sorry you are in so much pain. good luck!

DO I understand correctly that the VA would not prescribe you Oxcycotin?
Please let me know, I can try and help. My husband gets 180 pills a month for his disability. Was your accident service related? That might be why, I know my husband has to see my PPO doctor for his other ailments. I hope I can help.
