My mom had Rubella when she was pregnant with me, which left me completely blind at birth.
most of my friends know this, but what they don't know, I did not speak until I was 4 years old. I did not respond to sounds and things like that, so my mom thought I was deaf for the longest time, until I started to speak, and when I did speak, I spoke with a speech impairment, which I've had ever since. I have an autistic talent for computers though, have since I was in kindergarten, they learned that early on. When I was in kindergarten, they learned early on, I was not able to learn how to read, so in reading reediness, a teacher discovered a way to teach me how to read thru song. I guess its called music therapy now, but back in those days (1970's) this hadn't been heard of, but it worked, they taught me how to read and write that way. I struggled all thru school though, because I always did very poorly on tests, because I wasn't able to memorize anything I read, or listened to. I could memorize a movie backwards and forwards, or a computer screen, almost as if I had a photographic memory, but to this day, I have never been able to comprehend anything I read, or listen to on a tape player. unless its thru music, or a movie of some sort. Now I'm going to college, which I really struggle with. As you can see, I can write fairly well, but if I were to read this back to myself, I wouldn't be able to comprehend what its saying. Well I might be able to if its my own writing, but not someone elses. Reading and vocabulary are my biggest weaknesses, because I can listen if its a one on one conversation, like over the phone especially, but if its a book on tape, or I'm in a crowd of people, my brain somehow doesn't follow whats going on. I also have this "thing" where I shake, and make strange "humming" type noise, when I get real excited about something. My family always calls it my "excited thing" and has made fun of me over it ever since I can remember. my wife makes fun of me also, but its something I cannot control. I also babble alot as you can tell. I seem to make alot of people mad at me from that, but in real life, I am extremely shy, quiet, because I don't like the way my voice sounds, so I communicate much better either in writing, or on the phone one on one, otherwise I cannot do it. anyway I am new to this area, and thats my story for the most part. I haven't been diagnosed with Autism spectrum, but all my signs seem to point in that direction so far they say. Tom Posted on 10/30/07, 11:10 pm |

I have an idea that people good with logical and verbal skills are more likely to have Asperger's, and people like yourself with the better skills in patterns, music, and visualization are more likely to have High Functioning Autism.
You might mention that idea to the examiner giving you the diagnostic test. It could make a difference in the services you're able to receive!

From what I have read and learned, males on the autism spectrum tend to be better with the math/science areas. Females tend to be better in the reading/writing area.
However, everyone with autism is different. I don't mean to sound angry, but it is frustrating that just because someone is really good at something, and they exhibit certain autistic signs, it is assumed as autism. It could be something else as well. I just say this, not because I don't think that he may not have autism, but because it is frustrating dealing with the stero types associated with autism. I would also want to know is if you struggle with understanding social context, what people mean (the hidden meanings), if you are more comfortable alone or in groups. Please do not take offense, but there are a lot of others things it could be besides autism. I do think that you need to find out if it is autism (or rather, Asperger's Syndrome or PDD-NOS) or not. It would be benifical, specifically with you trying to go to college. Please don't think I am mad, I just want to help, but I also want to help others understand that what you say could be a lot of other things. I have a hard time expressing myself without upsetting people either way so yeah. Anyway, I will post a seprete topic to help you, and others who suspect autism in figuring out and knowing if it is more likely or not. I think that is something important to do, research that is.

no actually you have a point butterfly, that is why I called the Bowen Center, and scheduled an assessment test, to find out.
The other reason I thought it was autism, is because I also show signs of digestive problems, which is also typical among autism patients. I do communicate well on here, I admit that, but if you knew me in person, you'd understand why. like my brother in law says "this is my outlet" the computer. hehe, cuz in person, even around family members, it is difficult for me to speak to them and carry on regular conversations. I don't mean shyness, I mean, am not able to. but yeah you are right, thats why I scheduled a test to find out.

I thank you all for your canid reflections. I am the mother of a 3 year old pdd-nos who is really frustrated by people's expectations and the inability to communicate. The insight you offer is priceless and much appreciated.
Aside from my boy I have a young adult nephew who is apsergers and a middle aged brother who suffered CP at birth. There are similarities, but the most apparent difference between AS and PDD is the communication dysfunction. My AS nephew was really articulate, but he was overly cautios and did not associate with any kids until Kindergarten, since his mom stayed and took care of him. He is very computer oriented, but he is verbally able to express himself. Being socially involved and considerate of being rude I imagine is his struggle. ASD also includes various degrees of communication disorder as well as considerations of compulsion and hyperactivity. Many disablilties can cause communication imparement, most common is sensory dysfunction. One thing the spectrum folks have in common is some sense imparement or confusion. My son has a receptive dysfunction so everything is just sounds and noise until he recalls that noise means something. He is very bright and is computer savy. You should see him on the internet getting ChuckE Cheese coupons. After a point it is not important what the label is. You need to walk your path in life and be the best person you can each day. We all have the spark of life that we know as love, The important thing is to live to make that spark shine, and enlighten everyone to how you really are inside.

I have two immediate family members diagnosed with High Functioning Autism as well as others diagnosed on the spectrum in my extended family. My husband (HFA) is very talented with computers. He used to have a very hard time in school because he was the "weird kid" and not very social. He has improved in his social abilities alot...so it is possible!
My daughter has an exceptional memory (also diagnosed HFA). She doesn't necessarily learn things in the same way as other kids. But she's so smart and has her extreme areas of interest where she excels. I think that being diagnosed has been positive for both of them, though it is alot of work (multiple tests, etc). Good luck!
