I have several other women at work that are pregant. They all know that my children are autistic, so we've have the discussion about vaccines and the mercury. I was just wondering what you would tell a person who has to think about weather or not to vaccinate their child?

" While I do not advocate non vaccination, I urge caution to all parents.
Check family history. Extra caution (splitting multiple vaccines, opting out of some or all) if there is a history of bad reactions.
**Do NOT vaccinate** if the child has been ill in the last week. Even a slight fever.
Do not give more than 1 shot per month. This will require more trips to the MD & cost more.
Ask to see the information page that came with the shot (to check for thimerosal).

I keep seeing these statements when I google “vaccine schedule for autism”
No vaccinations until a child is two years old.
No vaccines that contain thimerosal (mercury).
No live virus vaccines (except for smallpox, should it recur).
These vaccines, to be given one at a time, every six months, beginning at age 2:
Pertussis (acellular, not whole cell)
Diphtheria
Tetanus
Polio (the Salk vaccine, cultured in human cells)

As a military brat who went overseas PreK, I’ve had as many shots as the current schedule. Some are not on the schedule (typhus anyone?) but all were given 1 per visit. My mom must have felt like she lived at the Clinic. "

" Like Free said one at the time. They gave Oli 6 at 12 months and that was including triple ones so it was like 8. Why did I believe those jerks! Tell them to care for the baby enough to not fall into the stupidity of the untested new schedule. There is evidence of harm, and not of safety. Hmmmmm "

" I would tell them to ask their prospective Pediatrician. Also, I think Dr. Jeremy might be a could resource for this one. "

" After Jake, I started my kids with their vaccines at ages 9 months and 1 year, one vaccine at a time. Both daughter and son after Jake are typical. I don't have any proof of anything or any idea if it mattered, but it made me feel a lot better. Elle starts kindergarten in the fall and will have all of her necessary vaccinations by then, on time :) "

" Thanks for all of your replies. I didn't want them to not vaccinate their children, but couldn't remember what could be done instead. "

" Hi Christy,

As a parent, your question is certainly valid as something I firmly believe in is we all want to do what is best for our children. And I would like to remove any anxiety surrounding the mercury in vaccines as it is no longer used as a preservative in nearly all early childhood vaccines (it can be found in some flu vaccines).

I'm not going to reopen the vaccine/autism discussion but if a parent is concerned there may be a link (...and I'm not going to discuss any research here), but if a parent is concerned, work with your pediatrician about a schedule that will work for you and your child (as freeinspirit mentioned).

The illnesses prevented by these vaccines are real (just look for an earlier journal I wrote about the recent measles cases arising).

All the best,

Dr. Jeremy "

" when my children were at the age to get vaccinated , we would hate it because we would have to go back every few weeks or so , because they spaced the shots apart , when they stopped doing it that way, the cases of autism went through the roof, my grandson wsas doing fine for his age group , after his shots everthing he knew and everything he did ,just stopped, i'll never forget it , maybe it's the trauma of getting all those shots at once , i don't think i can be covinced that it wasn't the shots "
