3 mo. ago i was experiencing irregular heart beats i went to lunch and go a green tea from starbucks and the heart beats got worse. later that evening i went out to eat and drank a diet coke and the beats got even worse i went home started going into a full blown anxiety attack and about 1hr. later i was in the er they said i was experiencing afib and advised me to see a cardiologist in the am. i made my appointment and did all the test and was told that i had a healthy heart. the cardio thought this was probably was a one time thing do to my dieting and total body cleansing i was doing. well exactly one mo. later i ended up in the hospital again. started off with the irregular heart beats then panic came in wich made it worse and i ended up in the er again. i am also perimeno so that does not help either with the stress and anxiety. i did notice that these both episodes came at the same time that i should have been starting my per. i have not had one since but did feel wierd yesterday but i had a long extremely hard week and was very tired so i made sure i rested and today i feel good. i have been a long time sufferer of anxiety and have always been experiencing rapid heart beats and panic attacks but this has never happen to me. this is scary. i don't know if i actually have afib because i exercise and do other things that i think would bring it on but since i have little knowledge i am not sure. i do remember prior to this i had drank wine a few times and woke up in the middle of the night with my heart beating rapidly. i do take blood pressure meds atenolol and have been on that since i was diagnosed with hyper thyroid 9 yrs ago. i also exp. my hear flutter but that is not as scary as the afib.
i am just looking for some comfort from someone that has been going throuh this. do i sound bad or totally different from someone that has actually been diagnosed with afib. Posted on 07/07/08, 01:07 pm |

I have had Afib for 5 years and was recently diagnosed. You just need to see a Cardio and let him/her devise a plan that will work for you. Sotalol has been my cure :-) Keep me posted on your developments!
Ciao, Pete

I'm 59 yrs old & I've had AF for 4 yrs now.
Caffeine, wine, & green tea all trigger it for me, so I stopped drinks/foods like chocolate. My cardiologist is the one who told me that cafeeine & the tanins-? in wine & the high Vitamin K in Green Tea all aggravate AF & to avoid them, so I've done that. It does help to do that. I'm on something called 'Pacerone' & 'Rythmol' but I cannot stand AF episodes coming on a wkly basis; that drives me insane. Aug 22nd I have a 1-yr ckup appt w/my cardiologist's 'electrician-guy' who duz a procedure that is supposed to get rid of AF for the most part. Sometimes, the procedure works; sometimes it duz not. The 'electrician' told me last yr that it usually works in 70% of patients. The procedure (ablation I think it's called) takes 6-8 hours. THAT many hours in an operating room even under mild anethesia is 2 scary for me. But. . . I'm reaching the point that I just may have to consider doing that, because I cannot travel, I can barely work an 8-hr day, & my wknd plans are always compromised by AF. The 'electrician' refers to 'quality of life'. That's easy for him to say. I have to have more assurances than what I've read on this website for me to take such a drastic action.

I recommend to anyone who is struggling with this condition to see an experienced Electo Cardiologist. The best information on this condition and treatments options are on the Cleveland Heart clinc web site - it truely is the gold standard for information. After consulting with thier staff I had the mini maze procedure done last December. Previous to that time I had been treated with meds for 15 years. Now I am down to one (flecanide) on a low dose to control pesky PAC's - way better than what I was on before.
Every person is different, do your homework, then make an informed decision on what you want to do. Good news is that that more information is being discovered about this condition every year, hopefully, there will be a permanent cure in the near future. It is scary, but can be managed, and I tried to not have it control my life. Hope this helps.
