I have recently started working out at a gym and this is the first time since I have been diagnosed with asthma. I was worried at first b/c my asthma has been out of wack and usually when I would go running I could only run for about 5 mins b/c my asthma kicked in. However they have this oxygen bar there and I use before running on the treadmill and it seems to help reduce the symptoms I feel after running. I sit on the oxygen for about 10 mins then I go and do my workout. I still can tell my asthma flares a lil bit b/c later I cough up some mucous but overall I think the oxygen helps me get through my workout compared to how it use to be.
Has anyone else tried an oxygen bar and how did it effect your asthma? Posted on 07/24/08, 01:07 am |

I didnt use my inhaler the last time I worked out and I felt my asthma starting to bother me but the oxygen bar seemed to help...yeah I still had a lil sign of asthma later that night but not like I use to. The oxygen bar also helps with your sinuses...my sinuses have been horrible the past couple of weeks and wow they have cleared up!! But I did look up info about the oxygen bar online and it did warn people with asthma to becareful b/c to much oxygen may actually cause your asthma to flare up. So I dont stay on it long..may be like 10 mins max

Too much oxygen can depress breathing centers in the brain. This is usually a rare occurrance though with other factors typically involved.

Medically, supplimental oxygen will only help you or your asthma if your oxygen saturation is low, (and it doesn't always help then if you have a "mechanical" condition that prevents the exchange of oygen into your blood stream). The easiest way to measure saturation is with that finger probe device they stick on you in hospital or at the doctors, you can even buy your own fairly cheap in ebay :-)
I have been on and off oxygen therapy for years, i.e., bottled oxygen and oxygen concentrator. I used to service this equipment in and out of a hospital situation (check out http://www.cleanairtas.com) If your saturation is good, then having extra oxygen really would make minimal (if any) difference to how you breathe, but.... If people are told "it will make you feel good" then 30 to 40% will feel good! Remember medical oxygen is a drug and usually should be prescribed. By the way, what sort of money do you pay to have a wiff?

Thats right. medical oxygen is a drug. even oxygen used in an oxygen bar should be used with caution. too much oxygen can be bad. we need some amoutn of carbon dioxide in our blood and if we ahve too much oxygen this replaces the co2.
im not sure how effective oxygen before exercise is especially if you are an exercise induced asthmatic because your oxygen level would be fairly normal and then any supplementary oxygen would not make much difference. I will try and find a study or some informatrion about oxygen bars are their use and benefits etc. olive
