If you have an albuterol inhaler, please note that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has told makers of albuterol inhalers that they must stop using the ozone-depleting propellants called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which send albuterol into the lungs.
Manufacturers have already begun to make or ramp up production of CFC-free inhalers, also called hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) inhalers, in advance of the December 31, 2008 deadline. Although HFA inhalers are effective, they cost from $30 to $60, compared with $5 to $25 for a generic CFC inhaler! If you were not aware of these changes, please check with your doctor and insurance company as to how they will affect you. Also of note, due to patent laws, generic HFC inhalers may not be available for more than three years to come. As an alternative to more-expensive HFC-inhalers, hand-held, portable nebulizer units are available for between $40 and $180, and generic liquid albuterol for them remains quite inexpensive.
