I got an endoscopy done yesterday and there were ulcers in my esophagus. My feeling was right, that GERD probably induced my asthma. Before the asthma symptoms started I was having chest pains that were getting worse. I ruled out cardiac problems. I was having the gerd issues before the asthma. I really wish there was more research on this. I am really considering surgury for the gerd to help control the asthma.

Have you been on prednisone? I find that makes my GERD worse when I'm on prednisone and need to medicate it then, but without prednisone I don't have much trouble. Of course, I blame prednisone for everything so consider the source!
Yes, I don't blame you for considering surgery but I would read about the procedure and expected outcomes first and discuss the pros and cons with your doctor (which I assume you are). Is there conservative treatment that is effective without surgery? I hope you are not in too much pain. I imagine it is very uncomfortable.

I will only do it if I know there is a good chance it will help. That and medication doesn't make work. I am on an H2 Blocker and I think I am going to start with the Prilosec I received from my primary doc to see if this helps. I did take prednisone too this could have been making it worse. The more I read about the connection the more this all coming together. I wish I had gone to a gastro months ago when this started! I was so concerned it was cardiac related. Just when I had my first appt with a gastro my asthma symptoms began.

There is a new surgical procedure for GERD done through the the endoscope to repair the sphinter that causes GERD. It is less invasive with faster recovery. You might want to look into that. I find medication is a temporary band-aid for this problem while surgery, though risky, might be a permenent solution.

I talk to my doctor and he said that prednisone can cause GERD and ulcers. They just have to watch it. I am on 70 mg of prednisone and my GERD has been actingup. I take aciphe and it seems to work. There have been times that it was so bak the medicine did not work. I found that if I tak 3 tukms and down a soda not just drink it but done it, in minutes the bruning goes away and I feel a lot better.

I feel for you. I have to go for my endoscopy this month too. I have a hiatal hernia that doesnt' help with my asthma either. They say that sinus problems, allergies, and GERD are the three huge contributing factors to uncontrolled asthma (trust me, I get yelled at a lot from Doctors for not keeping ANY of them under control). If you keep these factors under control, your asthma should be more under control, is what they tell me. :(
It would totally be up to you as to weather or not you'd feel the surgery to be of benifit. If you're like me, and don't take meds that you should on a regular basis.....I'd probably do it. If you're under control with your meds, and are more compliant than I am......think about it before you go through it. Everything in life is not without consequence. Good luck.
