Feeling pretty stupid

Hi everyone, I recently joined this group, my Dr. told me I had athritis in my left hip. I have always heard of athritis but never had the actual experience. Before going to the Dr. I ASSUMED that athritis was probably what was causing the pain in my hip. As I read some posts on here, I am feeling really stupid right now... How did you find out you had athritis? What tests were done to find out if you , in fact, had arthritis? I know this sounds so stupid, but I never had anything done before my diagnosis.... Do Dr.'s assume things like we do , should they? I am really feeling like I know nothing ? I just know that I am hurting really bad. Yesterday, the pain was even in my left leg and foot, and even above my left hip, in my back. My husband said it sounded like a pinched nerve to him. I really need some help understanding athritis! Any feedback would be so appreciated!! Thank you all for listening!!

" A rhuemotoligist is your best bet to find out if and what type of arthritis you have. There is blood work, bone scans, xrays and other ways of telling what areas of your body is affected before they can treat you. Good luck,
Donna "

" I had hip pain at first too. Then after about a year, in started crawling down my leg and then into my foot. The doctors medicated me for arthritis, but it didn't help. Then they said I had sciatica. I was in so much pain, and nothing was working. They finally did and MRI and found that I have something called spinal stenosis, caused by arthritis. They gave me an epidural steroid injection at L5, about six months ago. Now I am pain free. I do get stiff and achy in other parts of my body, but I remember that pain. terrible. See if you can get an MRI if your pain gets worse. Good luck. "

" To be diagnosed with something you have to meet a criteria list. At least 4-6 listed symptoms of that disease. Then you have to have signs of physical symptoms, the Dr,s exam. Then Blood work and x-rays or a MRI confirm the diagnosis. If your Dr. didn't do any of this or explain to you what was happening to your hip, FIRE HIM. Find a Rhuematologist and get your answers. I hope this helped you. "

" Thank you all so much for all the advice and knowledge. I am so tired of hurting like this, I cry, but it doesn't take the pain away. I am seeing a new Dr. Thursday. Maybe he will be able to do what is needed to help me get through this. God Bless All of You!! "
