I was diagnosed with Chiari in Jan this yr when I was sent to Kingston Ontario for surgery b/c of a leaking aneurysm(3 were found). Talk about a total shocker!
I am a mom to 3 beautiful children, and am scared. I was told in 2002 that I had fibromyalgia, but never believed the drs. Now I am being told the surgery is the only thing that can help me. They are talking early fall for surgery for the chiari, yet I am still being evaluated because of the aneurysms. Would one have any effect on the other??? So many drs, no one says anything, and I have no one to talk to. Although theres pain, I would prefer to wait til I have been one yr clean with the aneurysms, but I am unclear of the effect the chiari will have if I wait. Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks Everyone, for at least reading this post. Posted on 06/25/08, 11:06 pm |

The most important thing to keep in mind with Chiari is that there is no cure. Surgery is the means to stopping the progression of the symptoms. In most cases peopledo get relief from some of the symptoms that are caused by the CSF flow blockage and pressure-primarily the headaches. One of the issues with waiting for surgery is that some symptoms worsen over time, and do not get better after surgery, specifically the ones caused by the pressure on the spinal cord itself and the nerves running through the hind brain. These symptoms are the ones that you would need to be concerned about, and the ones that would potentially be issues for you later. The biggest problem in waiting would be if you were to develop syringiomylia, a fluid filled pocket in the spinal canal. If this were to happen as a result of the chiari then additional problems would be manifested.
This is something you need to speak at length about with your surgeon. The decision is yours, and I can understand you reservation in doing the surgery because of your other health factors. You need to weigh the risks and benefits carefully. I do not understand enough about aneurysms to speak about that issue.

Hi there, I too agree with what Race said about the Chiari. I would add that you make sure you have a good chiari doctor to do the surgery if you decide to go that way. There are so many people that have had the surgery done by their regular NS and then have had to have many more to fix what they messed up. They is a select few doctors who know how to do this surgery. You have to weigh all the information and go with what better fits you and you rlife. if you need help finding all the differnt doctors, just buzz me or post and we can help you anyway we can.
I hope you find some help soon so you can move on. gentle hugs, JOleen
