" Whatever releaves pain or anxiety can be addictive. You can be addicted to drugs, alcohol or any other means by which you find rest from the feelings.

I would assume that anxiety is why many people turn to alcohol and smoking. "

" Well i know that my family has a high level of addiction and all kinds at that. From Gambling to alcohol, drugs and food. When the few of them have recieved help it always comes back to anxiety. It has been a way to relieve the anxiety, as temporary as that addictive relief may be. "

" Sometimes the addiction is the cause of greater anxiety. Other times it's to try to escape from the exhaustion of dealing with anxiety. 17 years of bulimia provided me with a strange sense of relief. Very happy to say I'm recovering but after 17 years of running I found I didn't get very far. "

" i'll go with both views here... addiction can indeed arise from anxiety, and in turn, anxiety can fuel the addiction.

my example is smoking cigarettes. marlboro ultra lights, down from camel turkish silvers. i smoke as a concrete activity to distract me from my anxious train of thought. also, the nicotine calms me down. but, on the flip side, if i start craving a cigarette (being addicted of course), and i don't have one, or i can't have one at that moment (like right now, being that i'm staying with my parents until the end of this semester and a few months longer)... well, i'm really fidgety and anxious about not being able to have one!

it's the same thing with cutting. i'd cut to relieve anxiety and depression and everything running around my head... but then i'd have anxiety over anyone possibly finding out what i was doing. "
