Over the last year I have experienced significant health anxiety. My main concerns seem to be with getting cancer and dying from it at a young age. Everytime I get a ache or pain my mind automatically concludes it's cancer. I am young and in good shape but I always think the worst.
I also worry about my loved ones, their health and well being. These are the only things that concern me, I never worry about work, money or other stuff. I just worry about things I can't control. Does anyone else feel this way? Posted on 05/28/07, 03:05 pm |

This is not as uncommon as you think. I, too, have health anxiety...I do have health problems, but get sick to death (no pun intended) of constantly having them in my head. I do know that a history of sexual abuse can turn into health anxieties when we are grown, and I was abused somewhat by a relative, so I don't know if there is a connection or not. I am 58 years old now and wish I could get back all the time and worry I put into things that never happened. I have to say that I have a long list of health problems, so I'm sure that is a contributing factor, but worrying about them all plus those that haven't happened has not done me one lick of good. I'm trying hard to overcome this.

This is exactly what is happening to me. I had a health scare about a year ago, which remains unresolved. My dad had a minor heart attack in Feb. and that has sent my anxiety to all time high. I have started to experience panic attacks now. I know what you are saying about everytime you get a pain I think I am having a heart or stroke related problem. Thing is that worrying like this is not good for you either!!!!! I find that walking helps ease my mind a little. I wish I had some good advice, but I really understand how your feel. Message me sometime if you would like to talk.

Oh yes. My mother did die of cancer at 45 so now I'm almost 40 and having to face having preventitive surgery. The thought of going through with it is giving me major anxiety. but the thought of not going through with it gives me major anxiety as well. If you don't have cancer running in your family I would just focus on eating healthy and exercising. That's all you can do to prevent it. I constantly worry about what I can't control. I'm almost thinking having the surgery is taking control over the situation, I just worry about the effects of the surgery and quality of life after

Well, let me put a thought in here. Worrying will only make you waste today and rob joy from tomorrow. This i know. I had cancer (15 yrs back), I have lifelong allergies, eczema and just had back surgery last year. I've become sooo accustomed to Drs. tests, shots, etc., that now when i take a test i tell them to call me if the results are bad - i'm not calling them. I find this lets me let go of it faster, otherwise i'll obsess.
Also, all those things i had above, all got fixed (well except the eczema, we're working on that) so even if you have something happen in life, it doesn't mean your going to suffer in a corner with no one to help you. In fact, during a time of trial, you'll be surprised how many people come up on the care and prayer list to you. Don't worry about tomorrow, enjoy TODAY, and remember - most crap is curable anyway. Hope this helps! d

Wow, oh wow. I thought I was the only one having these anxieties.
Thirty or so years back I was referred to a Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat specialist because they found something in my lower right sinus. The first thing the specialist starting talking about was cancer. He talked all about some of his patients who had let it go till it was too late. Although he never said I had cancer, just the way he talked about it made me think I had it. Anyway it turned out to be an infection but, I've developed a deep anxiety about health issues. I dread going to the doctor for fear of repeating the previous experience. I force myself to go and except for a diagnosis of Diabetes, along with the associated hypertension and colesterol, I've it's been good. Still any ache or pain makes me go nuts. The doctor I'm seeing has mis-diagnosed me several times with what turned out to be nothing but it scares the bejesus out of me. I'm suffer high anxiety until it's discovered nothing is wrong. My last blood test came back okay except I have borderline anemia. Now he wants me to have another colonosopy to check for bleeding polpys. The GI doctor thought this was a little weird since I got one three years ago and everything was okay. Anyway, thank God for Ativan. It's been my Godsend. The doc doesn't want to give me too many though as he worrys I might get addicted. Pleeezzzeee.

I am the same way!! Lately, I constantly worry about my health and things that can go wrong in my body. I mostly worry about dying at a young age because I want to experience life and live my life to the fullest.. So we are in the same boat.

I definitely have experienced that just this year. I was became obsessed with the idea I was about to have a stroke or heart attack. I know it runs in my family and I started feeling dizzy at work and almost like I was about to pass out. That just made things worse being afraid of it.
Also, my roommate/best friend is very overweight, and I got to be pretty scared she'd die in her sleep. There were a couple nights where I got up and listened at her door to make sure I could hear her breathing. I notice I worry about my health, and her health, when other worries aren't so bad. It's like I have many layers of worry. I fall back on worrying about health when I'm not worried about immediate concerns like money.
