I need to get a job, but the thought of filling out applications and doing interviews makes me panic. And, it's very hard to present a positive image when I'm nervous and have negative thoughts and low self esteem. I feel barely competent as a human being, and thats what I tend to project. Anyone have ideas about how to deal with these things and get hired?

Just try to stay focused. Just that fact that you are getting out there to get a job should make you feel good about yourself. When you feel a negitive though comming on try to replace it with a realistic positive one. If you have a fear that someone knows that you are nervous think about it EVERYONE GETS NERVOUS. That is normal, and good luck to you.

I couldn't work for a long time because of my anxiety and some other conditions. When I finally found the courage to try to get out there again, I started with what I call a 'junk job'. A job that I'm over-qualified for and that paid not much. I started there even though I was terrified and did better than I thought I would. It wasn't perfect, and I had my moments, but it showed me that I can handle it. Now, I have a better job, still not great, but I am still training myself.

I just recently went through the interview process and got the job. I took a Klonopin before going. They don't make me feel sleepy or dizzy or anything. I just concentrated on the questions and pretended like I didn't have anxiety and it went suprisingly well. Now I'm nervous about actually doing the job, but that's a whole other thing. Also, worse case is that you don't get hired and you'll be without a job which is where you are now, so you're no worse off. Good luck and get out there. This is good practice for that interview that will land you a good job.

Try not to take this one interview so seriously and look at it like a rehearsal for the next interview, or the 10th one after it. I really believe that finding a job is a numbers game--the more interviews you go on, the better your chances of finding a job. Also, the more interviews you go on, the better you'll get at doing them.
They're really just performances. Try to feel good about the things you did to GET to the interview...like putting on a nice shirt, or doing a great job with your hair. Just pulling yourself together is a lot. Most importantly, have faith that someone, somewhere will really like you and hire you. Be yourself. After all, that's who you'll be when you start the job! Good luck, and a big hug to you!

Keep your eye on the prize. The rest is a means to an end.
