Anyone Else Have Edema caused by Anemia?

I went to the doctor, went through a whole ordeal! They thought my thyroid was malfunctioning but found out that I have Edema (swelling of the feet and ankles due to fluid in the joints)! They said there is no "medically proven" reason as to why I would have it. They said it might have something to do with my being "Anemic as Hell" - as the doctor said! They have me taking Triamterene/HCTZ 37.5/25 CPBRR. They advised me to take one pill a day as needed. Basically its a water pill... One pill a day isnt working so I upped myself to two... still no. So I decided to try 4! Finally my feet swelled down by about half! As long as I drink plenty of water to rehydrate my body taking four of those pills a day shouldnt hurt me. Im also taking asprins daily as well because, as you can imagine, my feet are so sore and as the fluid goes away my joints feel like there grinding! He said this is normal for the first little while because my joints got used to that cusion there!
Anyone else have this problem? I personally dont think its from being Anemic because Ive been Anemic since birth and have never had this problem until now! Posted on 05/12/08, 11:05 am |

I also have the same problem, I am really anemic, having had 3 iron transfusions, and came back from holiday with really swollen feet. I also got put on the fluid tablets. They helped a bit, but I stopped taking them and started walking more. Slowly but surely my feet have gone down and now are only slightly swollen. I hope you get some relief soon.

I am not sure how anemia cuases edema. I could guess about it being due your RBC being low and not circulating oxygen through your veins as it should hence may relate to the fluid build up. But that is just a guess.
The water pill are good. I am not familiar with the one you are taking but with diuretic be careful as many can cause kidney problems if you take to much over a period of time. I would certainly ask your doctor if 4 is ok if he only wants you on one. As mentioned here a good walk helps with circulatin and help with the edema. You also may want to watch your sodium intake more. It will make you retain fluid if you are taking in to many mgs of sodium. When you can elevate your feet when sitting. Sorry to hear your anemia is so bad you may have to deal with it so long. I am sure you are watching your diet better. I was put on and iron supplement around sept. and still on it but my level is fine now due to the supplement and a better diet. My anemia didn't just come from the iron deficiency but I was loosing blood from and ulcer in my stomach. Unless the edema get more extreme your doctor may be calling it right. Would nice to hear any update of news you find out. I wish the the best with your health.
