This has always been something very interesting to me that I have no clue about...

There are hundreds if not thousands of brands of alcohol.

The preference of taste is obvious but why is it that some people react differently to certain types? Why do we crave one brand and not others?

Are there specific components or compounds that that are separate in different types??

I mean regardless of what brand, isn't all alcohol the same?

I wonder if anyone has done this kind of study or correlation with alcoholics and brain chemistry. Somehow I feel this matters and should be looked into.

It seems that it could be a study that could help develop meds or at least provide information to help alcoholics.

" I believe, based on my own experiences and seeing others, that vodka makes people mean. Maybe the carbs from potatoes? (the rise and fall so to speak??) Also makes you warm, maybe cause it's cold in russia? Isn't vodka a drink of choice in russia? I know nothing, so don't hold me to that please. :)

Tequila makes me giggly. Wine makes me sad. Beer, I can go either way, usually giggly too, depends on how many I've had! :)

I'd be very interested to hear though, this is a good subject Julie. I like it and am intrigued by what others have to say... :) "

" I drank Gin and Tonics because of my fear of contracting Malaria. Cheap Gin most of the time, but good Gin was always appreciated. For some reason I can't stand Vodka. Even the smell of Absolute Citron makes me want to puke.

I bet that doesn't answer your question, but I just wanted to type something. "

" I know they all say one is like the next but I know I react differently to different ones. Red wine makes me amorous (being PC here) by the second glass but very unpredictable in quantity. Vodka always gave me the most predictable buzz as long as I mix it with club. Tequila makes me silly. Beer just makes me feel bloated. Nyquil make me sweepy :) "

" I find hard alcohol too much for me. I cannot tolerate the brown stuff. Just can't. I get waaaay too drunk - very easily - on hard alcohol and recouping is more painful and difficult.
Beer, on the other hand, seems I can drink it forever and never get a headache.
Of course these days I can't drink anything like I used to but when I wasn't an alcoholic hard alcohol got me way too drunk and I have said and done things I really regret and ashamed of.
So though alcohol is alcohol is alcohol, I really think there is a big difference. Interesting. "

" Wine, wine, wine! Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Savengion but it makes me friggin nuts. Gave me a heavy high and eventually feel numb. Either very calm & high or angry. Never did at first. Weird.. The only alcohol that would make me black out. The only one I CRAVE.

Loved bourbon. I could drink it straight and loved the burn. Gave me a clean high, silly and giggly. Never blacked out. Don't crave It.

Gin gave me a happy high. Never blacked out. Never craved it.

Beer never got me drunk. Just lightly buzzed.
Only drank it if offered. Wouldn't waste my money on it. On a very hot day I liked it.

Everything else I could care less about. Was nasty to me. "

" Dreamingtree... I'm with you... wine, wine, wine... I hate hard alcohol other than vodka. I can't drink beer. I've only had about 3 beers my entire life, and all it takes is one and my sinus swell up and I fall asleep. I must be allergic to the hops... "

" I CAN REMEMBER THE TASTE OF MOST BOOZE. I DID HAVE DIFFERENT EFFECTS FROM CHANGING MY DRINK. SCOTCH MADE ME VIOLENT. BURBON MADE ME SING. GIN/VODKA MADE ME, NAKED! "
