I meant to type in my post almost 5 months of sobriety, I guess it matters. I am so very ill right now, just don't know anymore. I feel very stupid and like an idiot, and very ill. That's what I get, oh well, I deserve it.

If you are a member of AA and have a sponsor call them ASAP and tell them about the pain meds. You should do this so you don't fall into the addiction trap. Honesty with people in AA about your needed use will help you to stop taking them when they are no longer needed. If anyone tells you can't take them pay no attention. Just be honest with yourself, family, AA friends and Your doctors.
If you are under the influence of strong medication you have little control over what you say, and do. Hopefully others will recognize this. I've been where you are and said some pretty crazy things that I would never say under normal conditions.

How about a gratitude list, or at least try to list a few things you like about yourself. Start some positive thinking to turn your mood around. You're being very hard on yourself right now.

Think of all of your accomplishments. 5 months is wonderful! Hang in there. I pray your chronic pain from your disease eases up for you. It is hard when you are depressed and you must not blame yourself for it. Just cut yourself some slack once in awhile. Try to communicate with your friend honestly.

You know, I am on pain medication too right now. Trying to get off with my Dr's help. I'm not sure what caused your weight loss, but I lost a lot of weight just from being on the medication. I just didn't feel hungry or have an appetite. I make sure I eat good now because when I tried to stop the medication, I just felt so weak. With the pain medication I felt alright, but without it I felt all at once what I should have felt all along. i didn't have any depression from the meds, but I have dealt with depression for many years. Most of my depression was the result of alcohol. Alcohol brought me many emotional problems. Long ago they taught me some things in a treatment center. One of them was to keep yourself busy doing the things you need to do. Another was to not let yourself have too much idle time alone. In early recovery being alone is not good for us. I made myself busy going to meetings. Just going out, or planing on going out kept my mind focused on other things, rather than my situation. Because of not drinking now, I find I don't get depressed much anymore. At least no where near what I went through before. What I have found too that's a real good remedy for depression, is to respond to post on D.S.. I usually respond to two or three. If I see something where I feel that I can offer some help, then I do it. I feel so much better afterwards, especially when I get messages back. By taking our focus off ourselves, and focusing on others problems, I find i forget about the things that may have been bothering me. Try it for a few days, and see if it works for you. A lot of recovery teaches us to focus on others, and help or give back when we can. It gives us a sense of purpose and meaning. Sitting and thinking about all our problems, that we probably can't do anything about anyway, is a sure way to become depressed. Focus on others, and what you can do today. Your not a fool either. Fools don't make it as far as you have. Be proud of yourself. God is. All the best. James

piper, i have a degenrative thing in my back which I was on pain killers for. Low and behold, I lost a ton of weight and became addicted. I was no longer drinking, I was taking these magic little pills that my doc said I needed. Be careful, I switched addictions and fell further down in 9 months time than I did 10 years drinking.
